This book constitutes the proceedings of the 12th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning, EC-TEL 2017, held in Tallinn, Estonia, in September 2017. The 24 full papers, 23 short papers, 6 demo papers, and 22 poster papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 141 submissions. The theme for the 12th EC-TEL conference on Data Driven Approaches in Digital Education' aims to explore the multidisciplinary approaches thateectively illustrate how data-driven education combined with digital education systems can look like and what are the empirical evidences for the use of datadriven tools in educational practices.
Practicable Learning Analytics
This book is about practicable learning analytics, that is able to become a successful part of practice, ultimately leading to improved learning and teaching. The aim of the book is to shift our perspective on learning analytics creation and implementation from that of “designing of” technology to that of “designing for” a system of practice. That is, any successful implementation of learning analytics requires a systematic approach, which the book explains through the lens of the Information Systems Artefact, constituting of the three interdependent artefacts: “technical”, “information” and “social”. The contributions of this book go beyond a consideration of particular humans such as teachers and students, and their individual activities to consider the larger systems of activity of which analytics become part of. The chapters included in this book present different cases of learning analytics implementation across countries, and the related opportunities and challenges related to generalizability of the results. The book is written for designers, students and educators of learning analytics who aim to improve learning and teaching through learning analytics.

Students' Expectations of Learning Analytics Across Europe
Abstract: Learning Analytics (LA) is an emerging field concerned with measuring, collecting, and analysing data about learners and their contexts to gain insights into learning processes. As the technology of Learning Analytics is evolving, many systems are being implemented. In this context, it is essential to understand stakeholders' expectations of LA across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for large-scale implementations that take their needs into account. This study aims to contribute to knowledge about individual LA expectations of European higher education students. It may facilitate the strategy of stakeholder buy-in, the transfer of LA insights across HEIs, and the development of international best practices and guidelines.
