Critical Perspectives on Veganism

This book examines the ethics, politics and aesthetics of veganism in contemporary culture and thought. Traditionally a lifestyle located on the margins of western culture, veganism has now been propelled into the mainstream, and as agribusiness grows animal issues are inextricably linked to environmental impact as well as to existing ethical concerns. This collection connects veganism to a range of topics including gender, sexuality, race, the law and popular culture. It explores how something as basic as one’s food choices continue to impact on the cultural, political, and philosophical discourse of the modern day, and asks whether the normalization of veganism strengthens or detracts from the radical impetus of its politics. With a Foreword by Melanie Joy and Jens Tuidor, this book analyzes the mounting prevalence of veganism as it appears in different cultural shifts and asks how veganism might be rethought and re-practised in the twenty-first century.

Victor

Victor tells the unique story of a historic community in the Finger Lakes region, just south of Rochester. It chronicles Victor's past as a Seneca Indian capital to the coming of Massachusetts settlers in the 18th century through to life as it was in the 20th century. With over 200 photographs, this book shows how people in rural upstate New York lived, played, studied, worked, and worshiped. The images are from the town and village archives, the Victor Historical Society, the Ontario County Historical Society, and private collections. Many are previously unpublished photographs, and several are by Fred Locke, an amateur photographer who is considered to be "the father of porcelain insulators."

Looking Forward by Looking Back

  • Categories: Law

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto, this book brings together a wealth of legal scholarship first presented at a conference in March 2025. At the time of its creation, the Faculty of Law reconceptualized legal education in Ontario and beyond. Law in a Changing World pays homage to the visions of key figures in the school’s history such as founding dean Cecil “Caesar” Augustus Wright, Katherine Swinton, and John Willis among many other leading lights within the faculty. Embarking on a journey of exploration and reflection, the contributors to this volume look forward by looking back at the transformation charted by the school and its faculty. The contributors depict how the examined scholars consistently developed approaches to legal and social issues that were not only innovative and influential when first introduced but that continue to be insightful and generative in our evolving world. Essential reading for law professors, practitioners, and students, Law in a Changing World calls attention to the rich history of legal wisdom that emerged from the Faculty of Law and its sustained impact.
