Centrosome and Centriole

This new volume of Methods in Cell Biology looks at methods for analyzing centrosomes and centrioles. Chapters cover such topics as methods to analyze centrosomes, centriole biogenesis and function in multi-ciliated cells, laser manipulation of centrosomes or CLEM, analysis of centrosomes in human cancers and tissues, proximity interaction techniques to study centrosomes, and genome engineering for creating conditional alleles in human cells. - Covers sections on model systems and functional studies, imaging-based approaches and emerging studies - Chapters are written by experts in the field - Cutting-edge material

This book provides an overview on the organization and function of the microtubule cytoskeleton, which is essential to many cellular processes and profoundly linked to a range of human diseases. Covering basic concepts as well as molecular details, the book discusses how microtubules are nucleated and organized into ordered arrays, at different cell cycle stages and in distinct cell types. In addition, the book highlights how defects in the microtubule cytoskeleton are linked to diseases such as neurodevelopmental disorders. The book is intended for students, graduates and more senior researchers in cell and developmental biology as well as for medical doctors.

Differential Geometric Foundations of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics

While all field theories are nowadays available in a modern, differential geometric, coordinate free formulation on manifolds this has been so far only rudimentary accomplished in general non-equilibrium thermodynamics. In this work it is shown how a fitting geometric structure can be derived for arbitrary compact (discrete Schottky Systems) thermodynamic systems, such as stars and black holes, using only a few thermodynamic principles. This leads to deep geometric insights. Some central results are the following: while in the theory of relativity the energy-momentum tensor determines the geometry of the space, in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, the 1-form of the entropy production rate is r...

Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration

This book offers a comprehensive review of current systems for fish protection and downstream migration. It offers the first systematic description of the currently available technologies for fish protection at hydropower intakes, including accurate and timely data collected by the authors and other researchers. It describes how to design and test them in agreement with the guidelines established from the EU Water Framework Directive. The book includes important information about fish biology, with a special focus on swimming and migration mechanisms. It offers a robust bridge between concepts in applied ecology and civil hydraulic engineering, thus providing biologists and hydraulic engineers with an authoritative reference guide to both the theory and practice of fish protection. It is also of interest for planners, public authorities as well as environmental consultants
