Fuzzy Rule-Based Expert Systems and Genetic Machine Learning

This book integrates fuzzy rule-languages with genetic algorithms, genetic programming, and classifier systems with the goal of obtaining fuzzy rule-based expert systems with learning capabilities. The main topics are first introduced by solving small problems, then a prototype implementation of the algorithm is explained, and last but not least the theoretical foundations are given. The second edition takes into account the rapid progress in the application of fuzzy genetic algorithms with a survey of recent developments in the field. The chapter on genetic programming has been revised. An exact uniform initialization algorithm replaces the heuristic presented in the first edition. A new method of abstraction, compound derivations, is introduced.

The Body as Interface

The Body as Interface

The body is a battleground. As such it has been at the center of debates in cultural and gender studies for over two decades. The concept of a culturally constructed, gendered, racialized, and class-contoured body which emerged from these debates is meanwhile being challenged, though, by an increasing impact of the life sciences. Evolving from neurobiology, molecular genetics, and biotechnology are projections of a post- or transhuman subject as well as new insights into our corporeality and the ways our bodies interrelate with the world. Situating the body at an intersection of a range of discourses in the human, social, and natural sciences, this collection of essays explores this fundamental shift by way of dialogues between disciplines in the course of which our sense of beauty and human nature, memory and trauma, immunity, power, and pain is being transformed.

Industrial Applications of Knowledge-based Diagnosis

Diagnosis of industrial systems and processes is a crucial issue in industrial engineering. Over the last two decades, considerable investments have been made on diagnostic techniques and significant advances have been obtained in many industrial sectors, including discrete manufacturing as well as continuous production. While the application of knowledge-based system technology to diagnostic tasks has been largely investigated in the last decade and a lot of significant experience has been accumulated, its suitability to large scale industrial applications is still to some degree an open issue. Knowledge-based diagnosis has often been oriented towards advanced research issues rather than ne...
