The Reception of H.G. Wells in Europe
H.G. Wells was described by one of his European critics as a 'seismograph of his age'. He is one of the founding fathers of modern science fiction, and as a novelist, essayist, educationalist and political propagandist his influence has been felt in every European country. This collection of essays by scholarly experts shows the varied and dramatic nature of Wells's reception, including translations, critical appraisals, novels and films on Wellsian themes, and responses to his own well-publicized visits to Russia and elsewhere. The authors chart the intense ideological debate that his writings occasioned, particularly in the inter-war years, and the censorship of his books in Nazi Germany and Francoist Spain. The different contributions included in this volume deal with aspects of biographical writing and other similar genres (semblances, portraits, etc.). These articles analyze theoretical and generic questions as well as some of the most relevant examples of the genre – with a focus on those written in Catalan. In addition, some of the articles focus on the relationship between biography and national images (nation-building) from a sociocultural standpoint. The Research Group on Contemporary Literature from the Universitat d’Alacant has gathered contributions from several specialists in numerous fields and has selected a group of relevant works for analysis. In addition to studies on authors such as André Maurois and Lytton Strachey, contributions deal with figures such as Josep Pla, Domènec Guansé, Josep Maria Espinàs and Agustí Pons. Finally, some contributions pay attention to the biographical genre in the audiovisual arts. The volume contains contributions in Spanish, English, and Catalan.

When in October 1996 in Cholula (Puebla, Mexico), I took charge of organizing the scienti?c program of the next Ibero-American Congress on Arti?cial Intel- gence (IBERAMIA 98) I bet on a couple of ideas. First, I adopted the spirit of the Portuguese adventurers to get the Sixth Congress on a truly international track. Neural Nets and Surroundings
This volume collects a selection of contributions which has been presented at the 22nd Italian Workshop on Neural Networks, the yearly meeting of the Italian Society for Neural Networks (SIREN). The conference was held in Italy, Vietri sul Mare (Salerno), during May 17-19, 2012. The annual meeting of SIREN is sponsored by International Neural Network Society (INNS), European Neural Network Society (ENNS) and IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS). The book – as well as the workshop- is organized in three main components, two special sessions and a group of regular sessions featuring different aspects and point of views of artificial neural networks and natural intelligence, also including applications of present compelling interest.
Advances in Probabilistic Graphical Models
In recent years considerable progress has been made in the area of probabilistic graphical models, in particular Bayesian networks and influence diagrams. Probabilistic graphical models have become mainstream in the area of uncertainty in artificial intelligence; contributions to the area are coming from computer science, mathematics, statistics and engineering. This carefully edited book brings together in one volume some of the most important topics of current research in probabilistic graphical modelling, learning from data and probabilistic inference. This includes topics such as the characterisation of conditional independence, the sensitivity of the underlying probability distribution of a Bayesian network to variation in its parameters, the learning of graphical models with latent variables and extensions to the influence diagram formalism. In addition, attention is given to important application fields of probabilistic graphical models, such as the control of vehicles, bioinformatics and medicine.

El domini senyorial dels castells de Vilassar de Dalt i de Burriac (Cabrera) i la integració històrica de les seves rendes dins del nou sistema econòmic que permeté al burgès accedir a la propietat de la terra, i conseqüències que se’n derivaren. M. Assumpció Zapata i Buxens (Argentona, 1954). Llicenciada en Geografia i Història i doctora en Història Moderna. L’objecte principal de les seves investigacions han estat les jurisdiccions feudals, els diferents sistemes fiscals, el tipus de propietat i la seva evolució a la comarca. En la seva tesina sobre jurisdicció feudal en el domini Desbosch, analitzà la figura del batlle de sachs, la fiscalitat i l’exercici de la justícia local. L’estudi sobre Les jurisdiccions locals en el pas de l’Edat Mitjana a l’Edat Moderna. Els batlles de Sachs i els batlles reials a la baronia Desbosch, guanyà l’accèssit al Premi Iluro 1997.
