It is the stuff of fiction: A collection of stories, never made public, is lost in a drawer for thirty years until, miraculously, the stories are discovered and published. It is also the true story of the book you are holding in your hands. Mary Ladd Gavell died in 1967 at the age of forty-seven, having published nothing in her lifetime. She was the managing editor of Psychiatry magazine in Washington, D.C., and after her death, her colleagues ran her story "The Rotifer" in the magazine as a tribute. The story was, somehow, plucked from that nonliterary journal and selected for The Best American Short Stories 1967. And again, thirty-three years later, "The Rotifer" emerged from near obscurit...

London: the early 1840s. The birth of the young Queen Victoria's first child is taken as an auspicious sign for all. But on a cold March night, a spree of dark crimes in shadowy workhouses shocks the city. When Inspector Owen Endersby, of the recently formed London Detective Police, learns that the string of identical murders and abductions have all taken place under similar circumstances, he fears a monster is prowling the city. How long until the murderer strikes again? Is this the work of a diabolical killer, or a madman with confused motives? Facts are scarce. Endersby and his sergeant, Thomas Caldwell, must start an investigation based on the fitful testimonies of terrified girls and one peculiar clue: a piece of curtain lace found in the throats of the victims.

Glastonbury

While evidence of Native American habitation in the area dates back to ancient times, Glastonbury was first settled by the English in 1636. Situated across the Connecticut River from its mother settlement of Wethersfield, Glastonbury became a shipbuilding center and later a manufacturer of gunpowder, ship anchors, cotton products, soap, and aircraft. One of the largest towns by area in the state, its rich soil led to the establishment of extensive orchards and a large poultry business. Today, Glastonbury is a prosperous residential community, boasting over 150 homes built prior to the 19th century. The town is also home to the oldest continually operating ferry in the nationĀ, the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry, which was established in 1655.
