Recent years have witnessed a remarkable growth in scholarship on Islam within Southeast Asia. Underlying this scholarship is a desire to resolve pressing social and political problems facing Muslim communities, an awareness of the significance of pluralism and cultural hybridity within Southeast Asian societies, and the rapidly growing interaction between Southeast Asian Muslims and the outside world. The chapters in this book represent some of the exciting new directions young scholars in Southeast Asia universities are taking Islamic Studies. Themes covered include Islam and liberalism, the diverse streams of contemporary Islamic thought, “neo-Sufi” movements, Islam and human rights, the growing influence of Islamic law, Islam and democratic politics, Islamic education, and the relationship between Islam and ethnic identity.
Kisaichi gives a timely and important book that develops a comparative view of Islam and democracy that goes beyond the usual stereotype of Islam being incompatible with democracy.
Based on pioneering research, this volume on South and Southeast Asia offers a cultural studies' perspective on the vast and largely uncharted domain of how local cultures are coping with climate changes and environmental crises. The primary focus is on three countries that have high emission rates: India, Indonesia, and Thailand. Whereas the dominant discourse on climate largely reflects the view of Western cultures, this volume adds indigenous views and practices that provide insight into Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic responses. Making use of textual materials, fieldwork, and analyses, it highlights the close links between climate solutions, forms of knowledge, and the various socio-cultural and political practices and agencies within societies. The volume demonstrates that climate is global and plural. Contributors are: Monika Arnez, Somnath Batabyal, Joachim Betz, Susan M. Darlington, Dennis Eucker, Rüdiger Haum, Albertina Nugteren, Marcus Nüsser & Ravi Baghel, Martin Seeger, and Janice Stargardt.
The Consequences of Disasters: Demographic, Planning and Policy Implications presents innovative multi-disciplinary perspectives on how people and societies respond to, and recover from sudden, unexpected crisis events like natural disasters which impact tragically on the established patterns and structures of their lives. Chapters have a wide global range across both democratic and transforming governance systems which spotlight the many different ways in which different political jurisdictions respond to the d...
Just like the Gutenberg revolution in the fifteenth century, which led to the emergence of non-conventional religious authority in the Christian world, the current information technology revolution, particularly through mediums such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter, has triggered the re-construction and decentralization of religious authority in Islam. New santri (pious individuals) and preachers emerged from the non-conventional religious educational system. They not only challenged the traditional authorities, but also redefine and re-conceptualize old religious terminologies, such as hijra and wasatiyya. This book explores the dynamics of religious authority in Indonesia with ...
