The Schultz family, gathered around their family table in 1913, made the necessary, heartbreaking decision to divide their family into two. One set to remain behind in Germany, the other to set off to meet their brother Peter in the prairies of western Canada. With the threat of war imminent, Frank and his wife Mathilda, with their three children and Frank’s siblings Ernst and Danielle in tow, see their parents, brother, and homeland for a final time on the pier before they board the ship carrying them and countless others to the safety of Canada. "In this first volume in the SCALE series, "Open / Close', a simple yet significant part of any building - the "opening" - is illustrated in all its different aspects, from idea to implementation. As well as the different types of component-windows, doors, gates, loggias, filters-this volume deals with bu.ldinq structures. It is also concerned with the significance of the "opening in building design. Openings define the relationship between a bullding and the space outside it, helping to characterize a location. In this book, all of the elements that mediate between interior and exterior spaces are classified both in terms of construction and design. Each of them is described and dealt With indetail. All the internationally renowned projects used here as examples are both practical and generally applicable. The projects have not beenchosed for their homogeneous architectural language, but for the high quality of their architecture." --Book Jacket.
Introduction to building façades as revised edition Façades determine the appearance of a building. Hence, they constitute a major element in architecture. At the same time, the building’s envelope has important functions to fulfil, such as lighting, weatherproofing, thermal insulation, load transfer and sound insulation. Over the past 15 years, façades have become increasingly complex – ‘intelligent’ facades, for instance, adapt to changing climate and lighting conditions. Newly developed materials and technologies have broadened the scope of façade functions. This book demonstrates the principles of façade construction. It systematically describes the most common types, such as post-and-beam façade, curtain wall, corridor façade or double façade, and provides guidelines for appropriate detailing. Numerous drawings made especially for the book explain the principles of different types of facades, which are then illustrated with built examples. For this second edition, all chapters were revised and all four examples in the case studies chapter were replaced by new material. The new chapter “Future Façades” offers insights into what’s next.

Space, light and material: from the meditative ambiance of a chapel or synagogue to the colourful, organic forms of fashion boutiques, the design of an interior space - composed of lighting, the surfaces, textures and colours of materials, finishing and features - creates atmosphere and lends specific character. The growing willingness on the part of designers in recent years to experiment with colours, materials and spatial concepts is demonstrated in the range and diversity of international examples presented in this, the third volume in the series "In Detail". All plans and drawings of interiors and furnishings have been carefully researched and drawn by the staff of DETAIL. Three introductory essays by expert authors are followed by 28 exemplary case-studies by such names as Alvaro Siza, Future Systems, Dominique Perrault, and Herzog & de Meuron.
