Asian Cinemas
The West’s current fascination with Asian cinema must be viewed in the context of a complex and often problematic relationship between Western scholars, students, viewers, and Asian films. This book examines a number of detailed case studies (such as the films of Ozu, Bruce Lee, Hong Kong and Turkish cinema, Hindi melodramas, Godzilla films, Taiwanese directors, and Fifth Generation Chinese cinema) and uses them to investigate the limitations of Anglo–U.S. theoretical models and critical paradigms. By engaging readers with familiar areas of critical discourse (such as postcolonial criticism, "national cinema," "genre," "authorship," and "stardom") the book aims to introduce within such contexts the "unfamiliar" case studies that will be explored in depth and detail.

Déjà Viewed
Situates the remake as one of the primary responses to Bollywood's globalization and corporatization. Focused on post-1990 Bollywood remakes of Hollywood films, Déjà Viewed tells a larger story of the rapidly changing Indian film industry in the wake of globalization and corporatization. It situates the remake as a gendered response to these changes, drawing on approaches from film theory, gender studies, and cultural studies. The book looks at films from a variety of genres and modes, including the Bollywood family film, romantic comedy, noir, and melodrama, and each film's close analysis is accompanied by attention to concerns related to remake theory, such as homage, anxiety of influence, defamiliarization, and pastiche. Seeking to historicize how gender and genres become translated and transformed in the Bollywood remake, the book contributes to transnational understandings of gender and genre as media texts move across various borders—geographic, cinematic, economic, and aesthetic.

Bombay
A Landmark in recent Indian cinema, by acclaimed director Mani Ratnam. In January 1993 sectarian rioting left 2,000 Hindus and Muslims dead in Bombay. Only two years later Mani Ratnam's audacious Tamil film Bombay (1995) used these events as a backdrop to a love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl. Bombay was condemned by Muslim critics for misrepresentation and it was embroiled in censorship controversies. These served only to heighten interest and the film ran to packed houses in India and abroad. Lalitha Gopolan shows how Bombay struggles to find a narrative that can reconcile communal differences. She looks in detail at the way official censors tried to change the film under the influence of powerful figures in both the Muslim and the Hindu communities. In going on to analyse the aesthetics of Bombay, she shows how themes of social and gender difference are rendered through performance, choreography, song and cinematography. This is a fascinating account of a landmark in recent Indian cinema.
