Knowledge and Systems Engineering

The field of Knowledge and Systems Engineering (KSE) has experienced rapid development and inspired many applications in the world of information technology during the last decade. The KSE conference aims at providing an open international forum for presentation, discussion and exchange of the latest advances and challenges in research of the field. These proceedings contain papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Knowledge and Systems Engineering (KSE 2013), which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, during 17–19 October, 2013. Besides the main track of contributed papers, which are compiled into the first volume, the conference also featured several special sessions focusing on specific topics of interest as well as included one workshop, of which the papers form the second volume of these proceedings. The book gathers a total of 68 papers describing recent advances and development on various topics including knowledge discovery and data mining, natural language processing, expert systems, intelligent decision making, computational biology, computational modeling, optimization algorithms, and industrial applications.

In this book the use of ER techniques for the design of self-organising group behaviours, for both simulated and real robots is introduced. This research has a twofold value. From an engineering perspective, an automatic methodology for synthesising complex behaviours in a robotic system is described. ER techniques should be used in order to obtain robust and efficient group behaviours based on self-organisation. From a more theoretical point of view, the second important contribution brought forth by the author's experiments concerns the understanding of the basic principles underlying self-organising behaviours and collective intelligence. In this experimental work, the evolved behaviours are analysed in order to uncover the mechanisms that have led to a certain organisation. In summary, this book tries to mediate between two apparently opposed perspectives: engineering and cognitive science. The experiments presented and the results obtained contribute to the assessment of ER not only as a design tool, but also as a methodology for modelling and understanding intelligent adaptive behaviours.

Multi-objective optimization (MO) is a fast-developing field in computational intelligence research. Giving decision makers more options to choose from using some post-analysis preference information, there are a number of competitive MO techniques with an increasingly large number of MO real-world applications. Multi-Objective Optimization in Computational Intelligence: Theory and Practice explores the theoretical, as well as empirical, performance of MOs on a wide range of optimization issues including combinatorial, real-valued, dynamic, and noisy problems. This book provides scholars, academics, and practitioners with a fundamental, comprehensive collection of research on multi-objective optimization techniques, applications, and practices.

The objective of the conference is to bring to focus the recent technological advancements across all the stages of data analysis including acquisition, processing, and communication. Advancements in acquisition sensors along with improved storage and computational capabilities, have stimulated the progress in theoretical studies and state-of-the-art real-time applications involving large volumes of data. This compels researchers to investigate the new challenges encountered, where traditional approaches are incapable of dealing with large, complicated new forms of data.

Over the last two decades the field of Intelligent Systems delivered to human kind significant achievements, while also facing major transformations. 20 years ago, automation and knowledge-based AI were still the dominant paradigms fueling the efforts of both researchers and practitioners. Later, 10 years ago, statistical machine intelligence was on the rise, heavily supported by the digital computing, and led to the unprecedented advances in and dependence on digital technology. However, the resultant intelligent systems remained designer-based endeavors and thus, were limited in their true learning and development abilities. Today, the challenge is to have in place intelligent systems that...

Enhancing Cognitive Assistance Systems with Inertial Measurement Units

The primary goal of this book is the specification, design and testing of an inertially stabilized camera platform for assistance systems with the focus on adaptive inertial measurement. This can be divided into sub-goals which also served as internal milestones for the project; development of a highly miniaturized inertial measurement unit, development of adaptive control algorithms for gaze stabilization, industrial application and development of multi-sensor fusion algorithms.
