Rapid geospatial assessment after the earthquake in Türkiye in 2023
Türkiye is located in an active seismic zone, and earthquakes are not uncommon in the country. The government and local authorities have taken measures to strengthen buildings and infrastructure in order to minimize the risk of damage from earthquakes, but the region remains vulnerable to seismic activity. On 6 February 2023 at 4.17 am local time, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake occurred near the city of Gaziantep in southern Türkiye. Its tremors were felt in the provinces of Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Iraq.
