This volume focuses on the various phenomena of religious encounters in a transcultural society where religion or religious traditions play a significant role in a multi-cultural concept. Religious Encounters in Transcultural Society is divided into three parts: Islamic encounters with regional religions, East Asian religious encounters, and alternative religious encounters. This book evokes the fact that religious encounters exist in every transcultural society even though they often remain hidden behind socio-cultural issues. The situation can be changed, but one culture cannot harmoniously and always contain two or multi-beliefs. The issue of religious encounters mostly arises in the transnational process of religious globalization.
Exploring sacred mountains around the world, this book examines whether bonding and reverence to a mountain is intrinsic to the mountain, constructed by people, or a mutual encounter. Chapters explore mountains in England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Ireland, the Himalaya, Japan, Greece, USA, Asia and South America, and embrace the union of sky, landscape and people to examine the religious dynamics between human and non-human entities. This book takes as its starting point the fact that mountains physically mediate between land and sky and act as metaphors for bridges from one realm to another, recognising that mountains are relational and that landscapes form personal and group cosmologies. "There may be no other country in the world that has given rise to so many fantastic, fascinating, and conflicting images as Tibet. In the 19th and 20th centuries, as the mysterious country on the roof of the world increasingly became the goal of travelers and the object of study, new images arose in various parts of the world. These two volumes are the first to trace the evolution, characteristics, and influence of premodern and modern images of Tibet in both Orient and Occident. Twenty-five contributions by specialists from Europe, the United States, China, and Japan present and analyze images of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism. Tracing the formation, character, and impact of such images, these studies address a broad range of issues, from the development of Tibetology and Buddhist studies to the history of ideas spanning East and West."--
