Portrait of the Past
This large book contains hundreds of black and white photographs depicting citizens of Lower Johnson County, Tennesse and the Valleys of Elk River, Roan Creek and Watauga River. This entire area is now under the waters of the Watauga Lake. The majority of these photographs are page size and all are identified and many include the location and year. Maps are included of the Valleys of Elk River, Roan Creek and Watauga River.

Joseph Rainbolt (b.ca1725/35) was found living in Cumberland Co., North Carolina in 1756. He married Susannah Grindstaff/Grandstaff, the daughter of Michael Grindstaff. Descendants lived in North Carolina, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Tennessee, and elsewhere.
Ancestors of Luther Lagrant Beddingfield and Grace Maybelle Stepp
Luther Lagrant Beddingfield was born 23 December 1887 in Henderson County, North Carolina. His parents were Ephraim Decatur Beddingfield and Sarah Elizabeth Bane. He married Grace Maybelle Stepp, daughter of James Henry Stepp and Nancy Justus, 11 January 1911. They had two sons and five daughters. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The Dugger Family, Johnson County, Tennessee
Julius Dugger was born in Virginia on 9 September 1760 and was married to Mary Hall of Rockbridge County, Virginia about 1779. They migrated first to Wilkes County, North Carolina, then west to the Watauga river, settling in an area that later became Johnson County, Tennessee. Their son John (b. 1780) married Mary Engle (b. 1785). They had twenty children. Includes descendants in chiefly in Tennessee.
