Testing Faith and Tradition

The Anabaptist movement had its beginning in scattered places throughout Europe during the 16th century. Today these Anabaptist-descended Mennonite churches are declining in membership, but they are not without reinvigorated faith and hope. Frequent wars during the past 480 years strained these Mennonite churches immeasurably, especially when their governments battled each other. This volume recounts those torturous and formative experiences. Seldom have the distinguishing features of the Dutch, the French, the German, the Swiss, the Russian -- and more recently, the U.K. and the Spanish-Mennonite churches been examined. These churches' cultural and historical differences are significantly unique, and they are a key part of the history told in these chapters by European Mennonite historians and church leaders. The Umsiedler, with their sheer numbers and religious vigor, are a current force included in this ongoing story. Testing Faith and Tradition is the second volume in the Global Mennonite History Series.

This two-volume work describes the significant activities of Martin Bucer, reformer in Strasbourg, and the profound influence he exerted on his contemporaries. The collection brings together sixty contributions in English, German and French by leading Bucer and sixteenth century scholars. They highlight Bucer's profile and style, his theology, his attitude towards social questions of his time, his work in the church, his relationships with contemporaries in the city of Strasbourg and all over Europe, his position on contemporary issues and how his peers perceived him — in short, the many facets of thought, actions, and influence of an important but largely neglected sixteenth century refor...

The Amish, one of America’s most intriguingly private, unique, and often misunderstood religious communities, have survived for three hundred years! How has that happened? While much has been written on the Amish, little has been revealed about their history. This book brings together in one volume a thorough history of the Amish people. From their beginnings in Europe through their settlement in North America, the Amish have struggled to maintain their beliefs and traditions in often hostile settings. Now updated, the book gives an in-depth look at how the modern Amish church continues to grow and change. It covers recent developments in new Amish settlements, the community’s conflict a...

A Witness in Times of War and Peace is a searing memoir that describes the struggles a Mennonite pastor experiences during the Second World War. Gerhard Hein is a practicing Mennonite when he is called up for duty, and he must reconcile his pacifist beliefs with the obligation to serve in Germany’s Wehrmacht. He displays courage in a terrifying and uncertain time by voicing his concerns about the National Socialistic ideology in both words and deeds, standing up for his beliefs by pointing to the One who can bring real peace. His story shows that in the darkness of war, rays of genuine love, care, and compassion can shine through.

The Amish

The Amish movement, whose members live in 19 states of Canada and Central America are a mystery to just about everyone except themselves. Here is a group which has deliberately passed on just about everything modern society has to offer, extending as far as electricity, gasoline, television, automobiles and movies. Yet Amish children are not educationally deprived in any way and regularly score above average on standardised tests. This book presents background information including a bibliography on this most interesting movement and includes also a review of Supreme Court rulings related to the Amish.
