This expanded edition represents the state of the art and captures many changes in our understanding of status epilepticus over the past decade. Varied characteristics and treatment approaches, the growing use of continuous EEG monitoring, and insights into the underlying biology and pathophysiology of convulsive and nonconvulsive SE are covered in depth. Authored by leading neurologists, epileptologists, and clinical neurophysiologists from around the world, this volume prepares the clinician to confront these multifaceted, sometimes subtle, and occasionally life-threatening conditions.

Essentials of Neuroanesthesia

Essentials of Neuroanesthesia, Second Edition continues to offer valuable insights into the anesthetic management of neurosurgical and neurologic patients, covering all topics related to neuroanesthesia and providing essential knowledge on the brain and spinal cord. The book includes chapters on anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, along with specific chapters addressing various neurosurgical and neurological problems and their anesthetic management. This updated edition introduces new chapters on artificial intelligence in neurosciences, the role of simulation in clinical neurosciences, robotic neurosurgery, trigeminal neuralgia, coexisting transplanted organs, brain resuscitation after c...

Carbohydrate Chemistry

Carbohydrate Chemistry provides review coverage of all publications relevant to the chemistry of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides in a given year. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology. Clycomedicinal chemistry and its reliance on carbohydrate synthesis is now very well established, for example, by the preparation of specific carbohydrate- based antigens, especially cancer-specific oligosaccha...

Differential Diagnosis in Neurology

Differential Diagnosis in Neurology

The purpose of an exercise in differential diagnosis is to establish crosslinks between medical facts stored in different sections of our memory. This book, Differential Diagnosis in Neurology, is the unified perspective of an eminent physician with decades of clinical experience and teaching; one of the most skilled clinical neurologists of modern times and a seasoned researcher who was the primary investigator for many clinical trials, and who published numerous clinical and basic research papers. The “real world” aspects of the book are based on morning reports with neurology residents and students conducted over 40 years. The differential diagnosis generated by subspecialty division ...

A comprehensive review of recent advances in the most severe form of epilepsy, focusing on two areas in which progress has been most rapid: basic mechanisms and treatment. Interest in status epilepticus--the most extreme form of epilepsy, involving continuous seizures--has surged in the last 20 years. Since 1979 there have been over 4,000 publications on the subject, including more than 1,700 in the last five years. No other text provides such a comprehensive review of the recent advances in the field of status epilepticus. The book focuses on the two areas in which progress has been most rapid: basic mechanisms and treatment. There is now a greater understanding of the mechanisms and compli...

Benign Childhood Partial Seizures and Related Epileptic Syndromes

Benign Childhood Partial Seizures and Related Epileptic Syndromes

The most important advance in recent epileptology is the recognition of epileptic syndromes and diseases, most of which are well defined and easy to diagnose. The benign childhood partial seizures syndromes exemplify the importance of a precise diagnosis and classification of epilepsies. They are common, and have an excellent prognosis which is better than that of febrile convulsions. Paediatricians and clinical neurophysiologists are now familiar with the Rolandic seizures but are not yet accustomed to diagnosing other benign childhood partial seizures and in particular benign childhood occipital seizures which are often confused with cerebral insults or migraine. The aim of this reference book is to describe the clinical and EEG manifestations of benign childhood partial seizures with particular emphasis on the occipital seizures which are often more characteristic, easier to diagnose and, in some cases, more benign than Rolandic seizures.

Panayiotopoulos Syndrome

Panayiotopoulos Syndrome

Details advanced knowledge on clinical and EEG aspects of Panayiotopoulos syndrome, that affects 6 percent of children with epileptic seizures and it is entirely benign. The spectrum of EEG with occipital and often extra-occipital spikes is richly illustrated as an EEG atlas. Relations with Rolandic, other childhood seizure susceptibility syndromes and Gastaut type idiopathic occipital epilepsy are analytically studied. Panayiotopoulos details the clinical and EEG manifestations, prevalence, pathophysiology and management of 'Panayiotopoulos syndrome' as it emerged from his long-term prospective studies of the author and worldwide documentation through independent studies. He masterly describes the particular type of seizure associated with his syndrome. Panayiotopoulos makes this book a reference for specialists.
