Contesting Transformation
Contesting Transformation is a sober and critical reflection on the wave of social movement struggles which have taken place in post-Apartheid South Africa. Moving beyond a social movement scholarship that has tended to romanticise emergent movements, this collection takes stock of the contradiction and complexity that is necessarily entangled in all forms of popular resistance. Through an exploration of labour strikes, legal organisations, community protest and local government elections, the contributors consider how different movements conceive of transformation and assess the extent to which these understandings challenge the narrative of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). Trustworthy AI
This book is an Open Access Publication. The Guidelines for Trustworthy AI developed by the European Commission High-Level Expert Group on AI is a framework that has been developed to promote and achieve the trustworthiness of AI systems. It provides seven ethical principles that can be operationalised in socio-technical systems to realise responsible AI design and deployment. The content of this book is shaped around these principles. In chapter one, the concept of Human Agency and oversight will be described from the lens of a social-cultural understanding of Agency, Autonomy, and oversight including a debate on the place of human rights and power dynamics. Beyond the Trustworthy AI discourse, this book will appeal to the wider AI developers community, civil society, policymakers, ICT and the RRI community. It will also appeal to other subject areas within the Social Sciences and Humanities including; Law and Technology and Digital Culture.
Multi-party Elections in Africa
Most of the studies in this book are about national elections in Anglophone Africa. There are also less well-known examples from Sudan, Ethiopia and Guinea Bissau. The collection also features studies of the local elections in Namibia and of a significant by-election in Malawi. The multiparty period has been put, wherever possible, within the historical context of earlier elections in Africa. Questions addressed include: how did incumbent governing regimes learn to live with multiparty politics? Why have some elections been so closely fought and others have suffered from apathy? Why has there been relatively open political expression and activity when the elections have increased the political and economic manipulation by incumbent governments?
