The Political Economy of the Service Transition

Over the past four decades the world's most developed economies have experienced rapid de-industrialization. More than three-quarters of employment is now in the service industry. This book is the first systematic examination of the political economy of this transition and explores its profound implications for the economy, politics, and society.

Education in Germany since Unification

This volume is concerned with aspects of education in Germany over the 10 years prior to 2000, focusing on schools, teachers, vocational training and higher education in those eastern parts of the Federal Republic which formerly constituted the territory of the German Democratic Republic. The articles deal with notions of transition and adaptation at a time of considerable upheaval and rapid change. There is a particular focus in some contributions on the problems involved in conducting research on the views of teachers involved in complex processes of adjustment to a new status quo.

Forecasting the Labour Market by Occupation and Education

Forecasting the Labour Market by Occupation and Education

Labour markets are differentiated by occupation and types of training, and these submarkets are seldom in equilibrium. This disequilibrium -- shortages and surpluses in labour markets -- is often attributed to a lack of flexibility in wage structures, the limited possibility for substitution between submarkets, and the high adjustment costs. In addition, market changes are difficult to foresee, thus making it equally difficult to respond appropriately. This book contains the results of research from three major European institutes -- the Research Centre for Education and the Labor Market (ROA) at the University of Limburg in the Netherlands, the Institute for Employment Research (IER) at the University of Warwick in the U.K., and Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB) at the Bundesanstalt für Arbeit in Germany -- looking at how each institute conducts labour market forecasts by education and type of training. The common element of these institutes is their use of the manpower requirements method. The book is grouped into three parts -- Models and Methods, Forecasts, and Reflections -- with each institute presenting its results in each section.

Workforce Development in Emerging Economies

Investing in skills has risen to the top of the policy agenda today in rich and poor countries alike. The World Bank supports its partner countries on this agenda in multiple ways: development finance, research and analysis, global knowledge exchange, and technical assistance. This report was originally conceived as a contribution to this catalog of the World Bank’s work, but its topic and findings are relevant to all policy makers and analysts interested in skills-building to drive economic growth and improve human well-being. The book examines workforce development (WfD) systems in emerging economies around the world and presents novel systems-level data generated by the Systems Approach...

In March 2000, at the European Council meeting in Lisbon, the European Union heads of states set an ambitious goal «to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world.» Such a goal requires major reforms of the societies and economies of the EU member states. This book explores the effects of these reforms on the eight Central and Eastern European countries that entered the EU in May 2004. Since 1989, these countries have been going through a major transformation to the market economy and democratic society. A Clash of Transitions attempts to answer how the societies and people can cope with multiple transitions. This volume is useful for courses on education, Central and Eastern Europe and European studies.

International Handbook of Education for the Changing World of Work

The aim of this Handbook is to review the developments that have occurred in Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and that may help improve the field. The Handbook provides information on TVET models that occur in different parts of the world; reflects best and innovative practice; and, wherever possible, uses case studies as examples. The 220 authors are representative of the various regions of the world and major international organisations involved in TVET. This volume presents the work of established researchers as well as the work of promising young researchers. Intended as the universally-accepted resource for the field, the Handbook provides a comprehensive coverage of cutting edge developments in research, policy and practice in TVET within a single source. It will assist those involved in TVET at any level in making informed decisions and further advance and improve the field and to bridge the gap between vocational and academic education in the 21st century.
