Corporeal Narrative in David Foster Wallace’s Fiction

This book serves as a critical examination of contemporary American literature by examining David Foster Wallace's incorporation of corporeal narrative techniques in his novels, with a particular focus on The Broom of the System, Infinite Jest, and The Pale King. By employing corporeal narratology as a conceptual framework, it sheds light on Wallace's profound exploration of the human body and its societal implications. Through detailed analysis, the book reveals how Wallace's narratives serve as a critique of contemporary issues such as self-alienation, consumerism, and the dehumanizing effects of modern society. Designed for scholars and students of literature, cultural studies, and narrative theory, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of Wallace's literary legacy and his keen observations on the complexities of human existence in the modern world.

Philosophical Debates

This volume completes a trilogy of Steven M. Cahn’s shorter writings that includes The Road Traveled and Other Essays (2019) and A Philosopher’s Journey (2020). Included here are his contributions to three philosophical debates: first, whether events are fated to occur; second, whether God is knowable; and third, whether morality can conflict with happiness. The book contains not only Cahn’s essays but also edited versions of the writings to which he is responding, thereby putting his remarks into context and rendering them accessible to all. These pieces make clear why Professor Cahn is regarded as one of the leading philosophy teachers of his generation.

Fate, Time, and Language

The Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of The Pale King and Infinite Jest weighs in on a philosophical controversy in this fascinating early work. In 1962, the philosopher Richard Taylor used six commonly accepted presuppositions to imply that human beings have no control over the future. David Foster Wallace not only took issue with Taylor's method, which, according to him, scrambled the relations of logic, language, and the physical world, but also detected a semantic trick at the heart of Taylor's argument. Fate, Time, and Language presents Wallace's brilliant critique of Taylor's work. Written long before the publication of his fiction and essays, Wallace's thesis reveals his great skept...

The effects of chorionic gonadotrophic hormones were tested on the ripening and spawning of black sea bass. Centropristes striatus melanus was selected because it is a vigorous, fast growing species with definite commercial potential. Dosage levels required, time interval between injection and ripeness, and methods of handling and rearing larvae were also investigated. The interval between injection (at 700 IU per pound) and ripeness averaged 54 hours. Eggs hatched 38 hours after fertilization and larvae were maintained for 134 hours.
