This book traces the history of the Queensland Irish Association, one of the most successful ethnic organisations in Australia. Founded in 1898, it reacted against the divisive religious history of Ireland, enshrining denominational tolerance as a foundational principle. It was an engine of integration, melding evolving Irishness with primary loyalty to Australia. Remarkably resilient, it navigated wars, rebellion in Ireland, economic upheavals, and internal disruptions. The QIA celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2023, continuing as the chief custodian of Irish heritage and culture in Queensland. The makers of this history were past and present QIA members and officials. Sources included Association records and a rich heritage collection, photographs, and reminiscences.
The Contribution of Mathematics to School STEM Education
This book presents contemporary STEM education research conducted by mathematics education researchers and their collaborators which highlights the important and pivotal role of mathematics in school STEM education. It showcases evidence of the types of integrated curriculum approaches to STEM education which highlight mathematics as a key component and where mathematical concepts can be learnt through integrated tasks. These examples challenge the idea that mathematics is just an application or ‘servant’ to the other STEM subjects and highlight the contribution that mathematics can make to the understanding and practices of the other STEM subjects. This book fills a void in the current research literature on the role of mathematics in STEM education, provides evidence of the possibilities for designing integrated STEM curriculum and highlights current understandings of the role of mathematics in school STEM education. For researchers, it identifies and elaborates gaps to encourage further exploration in this field.
The Jennings Families 1800-1985 West Cork to New Worlds
When Gregg N. Jennings of Columbus, Georgia, U.S.A. retired in 1981 he investigated his father's ancestry. After visits to Ireland, Australia and New Zealand he collected contributions from the extended Jennings families. He co-ordinated the development of a compilation which was produced in 1985 from type-written scripts. In 2000 I produced a replication of this book in computer format which contains substantially the same information. Inaccuracies in the original version still remain. It does now contain a useful Index of Names and Places.
