The Kendall Family: My Family's Stories in Print is a written documentary. The book records a collection of photographs and stories from the Kendall Family of Southwest Virginia, North Carolina, & Pennsylvania. Many descendants of our family live throughout the United States. Our origins date back to Northern England. Our first ancestor in America was Thomas Kendall "Senior" who was born in England in the 1600's and first documented here in Chester, Pennsylvania Friends Meeting in 1709.
Woodsmen of the West
When Woodsmen of the West first appeared in 1908, most readers could not relate to its rendering of the rough edges of logging-camp life. M. Allerdale Grainger refused to sentimentalize the West – he drew from life. While his dramatic and loosely structured tale is at heart a love story, it also tells of what happens when the novel’s British narrator encounters a small-time logging operator whose obsession with lumber is matched by his lust for power over other men. Today the novel is recognized as marking a significant shift in fiction written in and about the Canadian West. The accuracy of its detail makes it one of the finest examples of local realism in Canadian writing. It is also a fascinating chronicle of conflicting personalities, and of the genius of British Columbia hand-loggers, the culture of camp life, and the intrigues and corruption of the lumber business at the turn of the century. The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the original text, complete with the original photographs.
Kingston Kate
Kate's father owns a boatyard and they have a comfortable, loving family life until her father gets drunk, something which is increasingly frequent - then he gets violent. Kate and her mother survive it together until the father attacks Kate one night when she is almost eighteen. Her mother stabs him in the back with a kitchen knife, kills him, is tried and hung for murder. Kate's loving grandmother and friends help her through her trauma. The only thing she doesn't have is a man - until she meets Bernard Pinfold (Toby). They walk out together and have a night of love just before he goes off on a two-year contract in South Africa. He doesn't write and Kate is saddened by his let down. However, she gets on with her life, converting her grandmother's house into a home for handicapped children, caring for a motherless child, Joshua, whom she comes to love and almost brings up as her own. Almost two years later she receives red roses and a letter from Toby wondering whether she is free, or found someone else. He is due to return and still loves her, but doesn't want to upset her if she's got another life. Of course, she forgives him...
