Reverend Dr. Thomas Nelson Baker

The Rev. Dr. Thomas Nelson Baker was the first known African American to receive a Ph.D. in Philosophy in the United States. Born a slave in 1860 in Eastville, Virginia, Dr. Baker spent his youth and early manhood as a farm laborer, sporadically attending schools for freed people until he was 12 years old. Abbreviated as his education was, he nonetheless gained from it an unquenchable love of learning, dreaming of once more sitting in a classroom. The opportunity to do so came when he was 21 years of age at which time he entered Gen’l. George Chapman Armstrong’s Hampton Agricultural & Normal School, graduating in 1885. Lost Creeks

Lost Creeks collects for the first time all the journals and shorter autobiographical works of noted Muscogee (Creek) writer, humorist, and political activist Alexander Posey (1873 1908). In his brief but productive life Posey became an influential political spokesperson, man of letters, and advocate for better conditions in Indian Territory. Posey s journals reveal much about his turbulent but noteworthy political career, his personal aspirations and challenges, and the creative process behind not only his poetry and short stories but also his famed Fus Fixico letters. Drawing on extensive archival research, Matthew Wynn Sivils produces a carefully annotated edition of the journals and also provides abundant contextual information. This volume enriches and personalizes the legacy of this remarkable Native writer and provides new insight into the beginnings of twentieth-century Native intellectual, political, and literary movements and traditions.

Humanity lives in a bubble of ignorance, a state of mind that distorts our perception to include pain, discord and scarcity. However, this doesn’t have to be. Permanent Safety, Health, Prosperity and Peace can be our experience once we Remember who We Really are. This Truth is not new. Every Illumined Individual throughout the ages has discovered It. Religions have been built on It. For most of us, though, the Promise of sustained Harmony and Happiness is lost to the bubble time and time again. Why the Truth retreats and how we can contact It again is the subject of this book. In a deeply revealing conversation between human consciousness and Spiritual Consciousness, answers to questions such as “what am i doing here?” and “why am i in this body?” are explored. Ancient teachings are dusted off, linked together, and made more available and relevant. Our core assumptions, beliefs, values and objectives are profoundly challenged. However, if we are willing, Truth takes us by the hand and leads us to a higher Understanding where True Hope is offered in an increasingly chaotic, despairing and dangerous world.
