Prior to his premature death from tuberculosis in 1928, Larry Semon was one of the most popular comics on the silent screen. For a time he rivaled comedy legends Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton for fame and fortune. The son of magician Professor Zera the Great, Semon participated in many of his father's early performances. A talented youth, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist before going into motion pictures with the Vitagraph Company. He soon became a Hollywood legend, responsible for his own stories, gags, acting and direction. The result of 30 years of research, this long overdue biography recognizes one of Hollywood's most overlooked auteurs. The author draws on numerous articles and contacts with Semon's family and friends, and screens many films previously believed to be lost.

Weimar Slapstick and Hollywood Comedy Transformed

From cabaret songs inspired by Buster Keaton to Mickey Mouse's diagnosis as a “melo-maniac,” Weimar Slapstick and Hollywood Comedy Transformed explores the extraordinary appeal of American slapstick, cartoon, and screwball comedies during and after Germany's Weimar Republic. Bridging two crucial sites of interwar modernity, Paul Flaig offers a fundamental reassessment of Weimar culture, Hollywood comedy, and their intertwined legacies. Through a series of comic pairings-including Harold Lloyd and Curt Bois, Felix the Cat and psychotechnics-Flaig investigates the aesthetic, political and sexual forces that shaped Weimar Germany's fascination with American film comedies, as they were taken up and transformed by German filmmakers, philosophers, advertisers, artists, and politicians. Examining a wide range of sources-including films, manifestoes, arts journals, feuilletons, and trade press reports-he underscores the essential and diverse contributions of Weimar culture to our understanding of these comic laboratories of modernity.

Hitchcock Lost & Found

"It seems there is still plenty to discover and to say about Alfred Hitchcock . . . a host of impressive new research." — Journal of Film Preservation Audiences worldwide know him for Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, and other classics—but in Hitchcock Lost and Found, fans and film students alike can explore forgotten, incomplete, lost, and recovered productions from all stages of Alfred Hitchcock's career, including his early years in Britain. Alain Kerzoncuf and Charles Barr highlight Hitchcock's neglected works, including various films and television productions that supplement the critical attention already conferred on his feature films. They also explore the director's career during World War II, when he continued making high-profile features while also committing himself to a number of short war-effort projects on both sides of the Atlantic. Focusing on a range of forgotten but fascinating projects spanning five decades, Hitchcock Lost and Found offers a new, fuller perspective on the incomparable filmmaker's career and achievements. "For the Hitchcock completist, Hitchcock Lost and Found is an essential resource." — Philadelphia Inquirer Includes photos and illustrations

As an adult, Stan Laurel (1890-1965) lived in the United States. As a boy, he lived in north-east England, the son of a prominent local theatrical figure. This ground-breaking biography examines Laurel's family background, his formative years and his struggle to establish a show business career. Stan retained the emotional bonds forged in his youth throughout his life and visited his boyhood homes during his UK tours with Oliver Hardy. Describing Stan Laurel's key roles in making his films with his partner Oliver Hardy so successful internationally, the book analyzes how Stan's boyhood experiences are often echoed in those films. It also notes his influence on successive generations of comic actors who, to this day, still pay fulsome tribute to him. Included is a selection of photographs relevant to Laurel's boyhood, some related to themes in the Laurel and Hardy comedies.
