Paul Adler was born in Skalat, Russia (then Poland), in 1922. He lived under Russian occupation as a student until 1941 when Germany declared war on Russia and immediately occupied his city. The killings of the Jews, persecutions, and confiscation of property started at once with the help of the Ukrainian police. The Germans established a Jewish Council (Judenrat) and people were taken to slave labor camps. He volunteered as a roofer and was put into the Kamionka (Kamionki) [labor] Camp from 1942-1943. In June 1943, while he worked 2 kilometers away from the camp everybody inside was killed by the Germans. He escaped and hid in barns for several months, at times receiving the help of Polish women, until he was caught by peasants and Ukrainian police. They delivered him to the Schutzpolizei, and he worked with two other Jews in Podwoloczyska until the Russians took over coming West. He then joined the Polish Army and ended up in Berlin. He returned to Poland and worked there as a sheet metal worker until 1957. He and his family arrived in Israel in 1957. They arrived as immigrants into the United States in 1962 and moved to Philadelphia in 1969.
