Probing the Enigma of Franco

Probing the Enigma of Franco

This book has been written for the student and general reader to study the Franco regime within an accessible framework. It explores the various views of Franco provided by biographers and historians, and acknowledges that political bias and various moral stances are forever evident. The background of any character is critical and Part One is a brief summary of Spanish history during this period. Part Two examines Franco the person, and Part Three looks at his highly contentious polices during World War Two. The final section explores Franco and postwar Spain as a pariah state gaining a small degree of respectability because of Franco’s attempted manipulation of the Vatican, and his relationship with America during the Cold War. Franco was a long-surviving dictator from the 1930s and highly repressive to the bitter end, despised by many and feared by his countrymen, yet respected by others.

Nazi Germany and Neutral Europe During the Second World War

This book is a study of the ambitions, activities and achievements of Methodist missionaries in northern Burma from 1887-1966 and the expulsion of the last missionaries by Ne Win. The story is told through painstaking original research in archives which contain thousands of hitherto unpublished documents and eyewitness accounts meticulously recorded by the Methodist missionaries. This accessible study constitutes a significant contribution to a very little-known area of missionary history. Leigh pulls together the themes of conflict, politics and proselytisation in to a fascinating study of great breadth. The historical nuances of the relationship between religion and governance in Burma are traced in an accessible style. This book will appeal to those teaching or studying colonial and postcolonial history, Burmese politics, and the history of missionary work.

Challenging previous accounts, Megargee shatters the myth that German generals would have prevailed in World War II if only Hitler had not meddled in their affairs. Instead, he observes that the military's strategic ideas were no better than Hitler's and often were worse. 20 photos.

Eleni, together with a group of her friends and fellow political exiles, finds herself working as an extra in a French film: The Horror Train. It is not the first time Eleni has been caught up in a deadly drama, nor is it her first ride on a horror train. As the director waves his arms, shouting directions and re-shooting the sequence, Eleni's mind wanders to her first train ride: "Athens-Piraeus. My first big trip by train." " - You're Eleni? I'm Achilles." "They don't ask which Achilles. One name is enough..."" "For the rest of her life, Eleni will be "Achilles' Fiancee," fiancee of the guerilla leader, the brave, handso...

Since the earliest days of warfare, military operations have followed a predictable formula: after a decisive battle, an army must pursue the enemy and destroy its organization in order to achieve a victorious campaign. But by the mid-19th century, the emergence of massive armies and advanced weaponry - and the concomitant decline in the effectiveness of cavalry - had diminished the practicality of pursuit, producing campaigns that bogged down short of decisive victory. Great battles had become curiously indecisive, decisive campaigns virtually impossible.
