Finding Opportunities in Crisis

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. This is a multidisciplinary book on crises of all kinds from different parts of the world. Interesting? Not unless crises can be made to serve as opportunities for the future. Fifteen chapters present accounts of empirical research into personal and group crises where people have not just survived their losses and grief but have in most cases gone on to meaningful future growth. Tragedy from natural calamity, war, accident; crisis in the family and at work; despair from physical and spiritual displacement; helplessness from political and economic disenfranchisement – from Australia and America to Asia and Europe. These subjects receive expert multidisciplinary scrutiny with one common goal in mind. To account for the ways in which recovery and regrowth can take place. But this is not a book about the phoenix’s fable. It is empirical, evaluative, and pragmatic. It is about turning crises into opportunities.

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2016. The nature of empathy, its potential for healing and harm, and its potency to effect change for good or ill at inter-personal, ecological and global levels, are key themes represented in this interdisiciplinary volume. Section one looks at physiological and philosophical roots of empathy, exploring neurological factors as well as the question of human selfhood in relation to the ‘other’. The notion of ‘wrong’ empathy then comes under scrutiny, where the potential for empathic responses to upturn moral codes is examined. This leads into a focus on the written word, with exploration of written text and the act of writing on empathic responses. The scope is widened in the final sections to focus on ways to teach empathy and potential global effects of expanded empathic awareness. Amidst critical challenges facing humanity today, it poses the crucial question: how can we find more peaceful communion with those whose differences we fear.

Popular interest in empathy has surged in the past two decades. Research on its origins, uses and development is on the rise, and empathy is increasingly referenced across a wide range of sectors – from business to education. While there is widespread consensus about the value of empathy, however, its supposed stable nature and offerings remain insufficiently examined. By critically exploring different perspectives and aspects of empathy in distinct contexts, Exploring Empathy aims to generate deeper reflection about what is at stake in discussions and practices of empathy in the 21st century. Ten contributors representing seven disciplines and five world regions contribute to this dialogical volume about empathy, its offerings, limitations and potentialities for society. By deepening our understanding of empathy in all its complexity, this volume broadens the debate about both the role of empathy in society, and effective ways to invoke it for the benefit of all.

Being mobile in today's world is influenced by many aspects including transnational ties, increased ease of access to transport, growing accessibility to technology, knowledge and information and changing socio-cultural outlooks and values. These factors can all engender a (re)formation of our everyday life and moving - as and for lifestyle - has, in many ways, become both easier and much more complex. This book highlights the crossroads between concepts of lifestyle and the growing body of work on 'mobilities'. The study of lifestyle offers a lens through which to study the kinds of moorings, dwellings, repetitions and routines around which mobilities become socially, culturally and politic...
