This volume emerges from a partnership between the American Federation of Teachers and the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. The partnership brought together researchers and expert teachers for intensive dialogue sessions focusing on what each community knows about effective mathematical learning and instruction. The chapters deal with the research on, and conceptual analysis of, specific arithmetic topics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions) or with overarching themes that pervade the early curriculum and constitute the links with the more advanced topics of mathematics (intuition, number sense, and estimation). Serving as a link between the communities of cognitive researchers and mathematics educators, the book capitalizes on the recent research successes of cognitive science and reviews the literature of the math education community as well.

Number Concepts and Operations in the Middle Grades

For many students, learning mathematics in the middle grades represents a watershed activity. If they fall behind or fail at this point, they are unlikely to recover and to pursue a career in the sciences or other mathematics-dependent occupations. Originally published in 1988, the authors reveal at least two of the reasons for this watershed experience. First, the content itself is much more complex than that at the primary grades, a complexity that was only then being fully appreciated. Second, conventional instruction often is based on faulty assumptions about the way in which the content is learned. The chapters present the latest understanding of the nature of the mathematics content in the middle grades and the processes by which it is learned.

Fundamental Constructs in Mathematics Education is a unique sourcebook crafted from classic texts, research papers and books in mathematics education. Linked together by the editors' narrative, the book provides a fascinating examination of, and insight into, key constructs in mathematics education and how they link together. The choice of constructs is based on (some of) the many constructs which have proved fruitful in research and which have informed choices made by teachers. The book is divided into two parts: learning and teaching. The first part includes views about how people learn - from Plato to Dewey, as well as constructivism, activity theory and French didactiques. The second part includes extracts concerned with initiating, sustaining and bringing to a conclusion learners' work on mathematical tasks. Fundamental Constructs in Mathematics Education provides access to a wide range of constructs in mathematics education and orients the reader towards important original sources.

The publication brings together the latest thinking in five areas important to bilingual education. Part one, legal aspects, deals with limitations and capabilities of the judicial process, interpretations of major court decisions, and implications of these decisions in terms of community members, educators, and school boards. Philosophies, discussed in part two, encompasses the need for philosophical diversity to account for the needs of marked and unmarked population differences, clarification of philosophical disagreements, and suggests bilingual education will contribute to the assimilation process rather than to cultural and linguistic pluralism. The third part deals with social factors...
