Dialect and Education
All European countries face educational problems that result from the co-existence of a national standard variety of language and a range of indigenous dialects. There has been a considerable amount of serious research into the issues during the last 25 years, particularly in Continental Europe, but until now relatively little of this research has been published in English.
Language and Language Acquisition

LOWENTHAL University of Mons Mons, Belgium In September 1980, researchers from many different countries and working in disciplines as varied as philosophy, psychology, neurology, mathematics, education, linguistics, sociology, and others we forget to mention, again met in Mons to discuss problems concerning Language and Language Acquisition. Conflicting opinions among researchers not only from different disciplines, but also within a same discipline, led to many a lively discussion. This book attempts to recreate the atmosphere of the conference, by reproducing the different papers, some of which were rewritten after the initial presentation and discussion-session, and by giving a summary of each discussion session to enable the reader to understand how each participant reacted. Obviously, we accept full responsibility for these summaries: we hope we have understood correctly what each participant meant. This also holds for the special session devoted to an attempt to define the concept of "language". We suggest that further meetings should study language and context simultaneously, within the framework of a "CONTEXTUAL LINGUISTICS".
Language Choices
This volume concerns various aspects of the theory and application of language conflict phenomena seen from an interdisciplinary perspective. The focus is on linguistic, social, psychological and educational issues (conditions, constraints and consequences) involved in the status and use of languages in multilingual settings. The book is divided into four sections, which deal with: theoretical issues - such as the nature of the concepts of language maintenance; language policy and language planning; attitudes towards languages; and codeswitching and language choice.
Language and Schizophrenia
This book investigates the functioning of linguistic phenomena, especially in the area of semantics and pragmatics of the language of schizophrenics. By making semantics and pragmatics the primary objects of this work, the author departs from the traditional approach of those psycholinguistic and psychiatric studies which aim to explain how the language of schizophrenics differs from the common language. This book, on the other hand, basically attempts to provide the reason why this language differs. Sociolinguistics in the Low Countries
This volume contains the papers read at the Second Sociolinguistics Conference of the Association Belge de Linguistique Appliquee (Belgian Association of Applied Linguistics) that was held at the University of Antwerp on the in May, 1980. The papers are grouped around two topics: 'Language and Social Class' and 'Language Attitudes'. The whole is preceded by an introductory article by R. Van Hout in which he presents the Netherlandic language area, describes how sociolinguistics is developing in this area and briefly discusses the essence of each paper.

The Berkeley Conference on Dutch Linguistics- 1993
This volume deals with various aspects of the Dutch language, mainly synchronic, although the historical dimension is not completely forgotten. The articles range thematically from formal and functional approaches to issues in modern Dutch syntax to language comparison, language planning, and Dutch language in America. All in all, these eleven contributions represent an excellent selection of current work in Dutch linguistics by major scholars from abroad and this country.
