Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology

In Pentecostalism, Postmodernism, and Reformed Epistemology, Yoon Shin critically builds on James K. A. Smith's postmodern Pentecostal epistemology with the aid of Reformed epistemology. It takes the reader through an interdisciplinary journey that exposits and illumines the relationship among Pentecostal spirituality, continental and analytic philosophy, postliberalism, moral psychology, and philosophy of emotion. This work clarifies misunderstandings of Smith, in Smith, and between continental and analytic epistemology, constructively and coherently synthesizing the sources through interdisciplinary analysis and thereby demonstrating the value of mashup philosophy. The resulting epistemology strengthens the mostly descriptive epistemology of Smith with the warrant criteria of Alvin Plantinga.

Traditionally few people challenged the distinction between absolute and selective conscientious objection by those being asked to carry out military duties. The former is an objection to fighting all wars - a position generally respected and accommodated by democratic states, while the latter is an objection to a specific war or conflict - theoretically and practically a much harder idea to accept and embrace for military institutions. However, a decade of conflict not clearly aligned to vital national interests combined with recent acts of selective conscientious objection by members of the military have led some to reappraise the situation and argue that selective conscientious objection ...

Off the Rails

The train is off the rails! What is wrong with the train cars? What are the train cars? And how do we get them back on track? Each train car represents a different topic. We examine each train car to understand the topic and then figure out whether to abandon the train car or see if it can be useful again. In part 1, some of the topics we examine include: What is logic? Is there objective truth? What about objective moral values? Can we know the world around us? Are we good people? Do we have free will? Are any of the four major ethical codes adequate? In part 2, we examine the following questions: Does God exist? Is there any evidence for his existence? What are the implications of the evidence? Is Jesus a myth? Can we trust the biographies of him in the New Testament? How does Jesus solve the sin issue? What is wrong with certain aspects of the current church? There are many challenging concepts that are examined in this book. It is not for the fainthearted; there are many claims in this book that challenge the current status quo.

Written by a group of distinguished philosophers, the Foundations of Philosophy Series aims to exhibit some of the main problems in the various fields of philosophy at the present stage of philosophical inquiry. This book is written from the viewpoint that although justice is the most important concept in political philosophy, it is also one of the most contested concepts in philosophy. Coverage begins with an overview of the concept of justice, arguing that justice is a vital part of political philosophy, which in turn is part of moral philosophy. The book outlines an objectivist view of moral philosophy, which holds that moral principles have universal validity. The material presents a philosophical map to navigate the plethora of confusing, competing theories and concepts regarding the importance of justice. The author distinguishes between formal and material concepts of justice and discusses the related issues of comparative/noncomparative justice and distributive versus commutative justice.
