Hitler's Refugees and the French Response, 1933–1938

Julius Fein examines the French response to the large number of German refugees between 1933 and 1938. Fein demonstrates how the Quai d’Orsay sought a compromise between the Republican canon, which said France must help the persecuted, and the factors that limited its willingness to accept refugees, including economic depression, mass unemployment, anti-Semitism, and anti-German sentiment.

Higher Structures in Topology, Geometry, and Physics

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Higher Structures in Topology, Geometry, and Physics, held virtually on March 26–27, 2022. The articles give a snapshot survey of the current topics surrounding the mathematical formulation of field theories. There is an intricate interplay between geometry, topology, and algebra which captures these theories. The hallmark are higher structures, which one can consider as the secondary algebraic or geometric background on which the theories are formulated. The higher structures considered in the volume are generalizations of operads, models for conformal field theories, string topology, open/closed field theories, BF/BV formalism, actions on Hochschild complexes and related complexes, and their geometric and topological aspects.

Iconic Hollywood Dishes, Drinks & Desserts

Recipes born in the city of stars Los Angeles is a city where film mingles with food. From healthful salads to sweet treats inspired by California's agricultural bounty, the innovative fare mirrors the rise from a sleepy, western outpost to celluloid dream, where food has always played an award-winning role. The minds behind these delicious treasures include a pauper who reinvented himself as a prince, a penniless single mom who perfected a treasured recipe to create an empire, and a guru who provided good vibes and scandal alongside cold-pressed juices. Bake up the Cocoanut Grove's Coconut Strawberry Cream Tarts and sip a Zombie from the first-ever Tiki bar to create a little Hollywood magic in your own kitchen. Amy Bizzarri rolls out the red carpet in celebration of Tinseltown's iconic cuisine.

This book constitutes the strictly refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Automated Deduction, CADE-14, held in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia, in July 1997. The volume presents 25 revised full papers selected from a total of 87 submissions; also included are 17 system descriptions and two invited contributions. The papers cover a wide range of current issues in the area including resolution, term rewriting, unification theory, induction, high-order logics, nonstandard logics, AI methods, and applications to software verification, geometry, and social science.

Artificial Economics

Simulation is used in economics to solve large econometric models, for large-scale micro simulations, and to obtain numerical solutions for policy design in top-down established models. But these applications fail to take advantage of the methods offered by artificial economics (AE) through artificial intelligence and distributed computing. AE is a bottom-up and generative approach of agent-based modelling developed to get a deeper insight into the complexity of economics. AE can be viewed as a very elegant and general class of modelling techniques that generalize numerical economics, mathematical programming and micro simulation approaches. The papers presented in this book address methodological questions and applications of AE to macroeconomics, industrial organization, information and learning, market dynamics, finance and financial markets.
