Towards a Philosophy of Digital Media

At the turn of the century, the rise of digital media significantly changed our world. The digitizing of traditional media has extraordinarily increased the circulation of texts, sound, and images. Digital media have also widened our horizons and altered our relationship with others and with ourselves. Information production and communication are still undoubtedly significant aspects of digital media and life. Recently, however, recording, registration and keeping track have taken the upper hand in both online practices and the imaginaries related to them. The essays in this book therefore focus primarily on the idea that digital media involve a significant overlapping between communication and recording.

As a recurring example, Roholt develops the classification of musical instruments as focal things, contending that musical performance can be fruitfully understood as a focal practice. Through this exploration of what generates meaning in life, Roholt makes us rethink the place we allow smartphones to occupy in the everyday. But he remains cautiously optimistic. This thoughtful, needed interrogation of smartphones shows how we can establish a positive role for technologies within our lives.

John Christopher Miller was born at Werdenhausen, Germany, in 1759. He married Hanna Franciska Stratman (1765-1818), daughter of Christian Frederick Stratman in 1788. They had seven children, 1789-1803, all born at Hofgeismar, Germany. The family immigrated to the United States in 1805 and settled in Clay Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They migrated to Madison Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1815. He died at Lancaster, Ohio, in 1822. Descendants lived in Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and elsewhere.
