New Challenges in Distributed Information Filtering and Retrieval
This volume focuses on new challenges in distributed Information Filtering and Retrieval. It collects invited chapters and extended research contributions from the DART 2011 Workshop, held in Palermo (Italy), on September 2011, and co-located with the XII International Conference of the Italian Association on Artificial Intelligence. The main focus of DART was to discuss and compare suitable novel solutions based on intelligent techniques and applied to real-world applications. The chapters of this book present a comprehensive review of related works and state of the art. Authors, both practitioners and researchers, shared their results in several topics such as "Multi-Agent Systems", "Natural Language Processing", "Automatic Advertisement", "Customer Interaction Analytics", "Opinion Mining".
Machine Learning Challenges
This book constitutes the refereed post-proceedings of the First PASCAL Machine Learning Challenges Workshop, MLCW 2005. 25 papers address three challenges: finding an assessment base on the uncertainty of predictions using classical statistics, Bayesian inference, and statistical learning theory; second, recognizing objects from a number of visual object classes in realistic scenes; third, recognizing textual entailment addresses semantic analysis of language to form a generic framework for applied semantic inference in text understanding.
Proceedings of the 9th Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics CLiC-it 2023
The ninth edition of the Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics (CLiC-it 2023) was held from 30th November to 2nd December 2023 at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, in the beautiful venue of the Auditorium Santa Margherita - Emanuele Severino. After the edition of 2020, which was organized in fully virtual mode due to the health emergency related to Covid-19, and CLiC-it 2021, which was held in hybrid mode, with CLiC-it 2023 we are back to a fully in-presence conference. Overall, almost 210 participants registered to the conference, confirming that the community is eager to meet in person and to enjoy both the scientific and social events together with the colleagues.
Speech and Language Technologies
This book addresses state-of-the-art systems and achievements in various topics in the research field of speech and language technologies. Book chapters are organized in different sections covering diverse problems, which have to be solved in speech recognition and language understanding systems. In the first section machine translation systems based on large parallel corpora using rule-based and statistical-based translation methods are presented. The third chapter presents work on real time two way speech-to-speech translation systems. In the second section two papers explore the use of speech technologies in language learning. The third section presents a work on language modeling used for speech recognition. The chapters in section Text-to-speech systems and emotional speech describe corpus-based speech synthesis and highlight the importance of speech prosody in speech recognition. In the fifth section the problem of speaker diarization is addressed. The last section presents various topics in speech technology applications like audio-visual speech recognition and lip reading systems.

Francis Webb is one of Australia's unsung heroes, whose life, like that of Henry Lawson and Christopher Brennan, was a creative triumph over great personal difficulties and public indifference. Although supported by family and close friends, events led Web to find himself amongst the dowtrodden and outcast. Here, he found meaning through writing poetry of amazing religious vision and through reinterpreting Australian history as a quest for truth.
