Professional Ethics Education: Studies in Compassionate Empathy

1. 1 Practical Ethics Education at an Impasse Why is some practical ethics training a requirement of nearly all programmes in higher education? The short answer is that it is thought to be conducive to ethical decision-making and ethical behaviour. In recent years, the received idea that competency in moral reasoning implies moral responsibility “on the ground” has been the subject of critical attention. Today, researchers in moral education widely regard moral reasoning as but one among at least four dimensions of moral dev- opment alongside moral motivation, moral character, and moral sensitivity (Rest, 1986). Reflecting these changes, educationalists in the diverse fields of medicine,...

For students, citizenship education means more than merely learning about citizenship and democracy. Citizenship education means learning through practicing citizenship inside and outside the school. One model for that is service learning, which combines service and learning by linking community service and reflection about it in class.

Music, Education, and Religion

Essays examining the role of religion in music education from a variety of perspectives. Music, Education, and Religion: Intersections and Entanglements explores the critical role that religion can play in formal and informal music education. As in broader educational studies, research in music education has tended to sidestep the religious dimensions of teaching and learning, often reflecting common assumptions of secularity in contemporary schooling in many parts of the world. This book considers the ways in which the forces of religion and belief construct and complicate the values and practices of music education—including teacher education, curriculum texts, and teaching repertoires. ...

Understanding Institutionalized Education

Currently, the school as an institution is faced with a number of controversial expectations on behalf of society and politics in view of its significance, effectivity, and instrumentality. Frequently applied tests and longitudinal studies should measure the performance level of our educational system constantly, but there is still an ongoing disagreement in terms of of the organisation of schools and curricula. This book opposes the monopolizing of the school, arguing that it is irrelevant or guided by particular interests and recent tendencies that solely and primarily define the significance of school by its effectivity. The text defends the school as a place that should enable young peop...

Experimental Research on Teaching and Learning

For some time now, some researchers in the field of the human sciences have taken to dissenting from the purely empirical, «quantitative» position. Since reality is no unidimensional phenomenon - the main argument of some researchers - it does not make sense to rely strictly on quantitative methods. This other school advocates combinding quantitative and qualitative methods. But, warning from the aspect of methodology: it must be emphasized that reliability of the data is crucial. Only if data gained by qualitative methods are sufficiently reliable the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods can be recommended. This fundamental attitude toward applying quantitative in combination with qualitative methods is not only characteristic of this volume, it served as the decisive criterion for the selection of the contributions included.
