The Nordic Languages

Annotation This handbook is conceived as a comprehensive history of the North Germanic languages from the oldest times up to the present day. Whereas most of the traditional presentations of Nordic language history are confined to individual languages and often concentrate on purely linguistic data, the present work covers the history of all Nordic languages in its totality, embedded in a broad culture-historical context. The Nordic languages are described both individually and in their mutual dependence as well as in relation to the neighboring non-Nordic languages. The handbook is not tied to a particular methodology, but keeps in principle to a pronounced methodological pluralism, encompa...

The Languages of Scandinavia

"A much-needed, comprehensive, and accessible overview of the interrelationship among" Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, Faroese, Finnish, and Sami (Ilmari Ivaska, Scandinavian Studies). From fjords to mountains, schools of herring to herds of reindeer, Scandinavia is rich in astonishing natural beauty. Less well known, however, is that it is also rich in languages. Home to seven languages, Scandinavia has traditionally been understood as linguistically bifurcated between its five Germanic languages (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, and Faroese) and its two Finno-Ugric ones (Finnish and Sámi). The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Syntax

Comparison across formal languages is an essential part of formal linguistics. The study of closely-related varieties has proven extremely useful in comparing differences that might otherwise appear unrealted, and has helped to identify the core principles of Universal Grammar. This comprehensive handbook serves two functions. It will provide a general and theoretical introduction to comparative syntax, its methodology, and its relation to other domains of linguistic inquiry; and it will provide a systematic selection of the best comparative work being done today on those language groups and families where substantial progress has been achieved. With top-notch editors and contributors from around the world, this volume will be an essential resource for scholars and students in formal linguistics.

Does the Nordic language community exist?

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2021-004/ The Nordic Council of Ministers has asked 2,000 young people aged 16-25 throughout the Nordic region about their language skills and their attitudes towards language and culture. The survey reveals first and foremost that young people’s understanding of the Scandinavian languages varies greatly between the Nordic nations and between the languages. In several countries, large proportions do not consider it easy to understand one or more of the Scandinavian languages. The report also discusses what these results may mean for the integration between the Nordic countries and the Nordic identity.
