This anthology explores the recurring trope of the dead or absent mother in Western cultural productions. Across historical periods and genres, this dialogue has been employed to articulate and debate questions of politics and religion, social and cultural change as well as issues of power and authority within the family. Åström seeks to investigate the many functions and meanings of the dialogue by covering extensive material from the 1200s to 2014 including hagiography, romances, folktales, plays, novels, children’s literature and graphic novels, as well as film and television. This is achieved by looking at the discourse both as products of the time and culture that produced the various narratives, and as part of an on-going cultural conversation that spans the centuries, resulting in an innovative text that will be of great interest to all scholars of gender, feminist and media studies.

Women Staging and Restaging the Nineteenth Century

Women Staging and Restaging the Nineteenth Century is the first book to explore overlooked histories of women who filled the theatrical stages of the nineteenth century, dialoguing with contemporary adaptations, reworkings, and retellings of these histories in Great Britain and beyond. Female managers, playwrights, and performers emerge from the archives to forge geographical and temporal ‘intertheatricalities’ with contemporary productions by women who revisit and re-stage the period and with neo-Victorian fiction written by women and inspired by Victorian stage practices and spectacle. Chapters navigate from Great Britain to Australia, from Japan to the United States, to offer a glimps...

Feminist Gothic

This examination of 32 ghost stories by 21 Victorian women writers defines a new genre, Feminist Gothic, that utilizes the Gothic structure and its uncanny atmosphere of ambiguity to deploy competing narratives that seek to undermine patriarchy by simultaneously upholding and subverting its dominant myths. While a surface reading of these tales often interprets the outer, public, overt voice as one of patriarchal appeasement, a second reading uncovers an inner, private, covert voice that undermines the first. By focusing exclusively on women’s stories and examining Victorian ghost stories by lesser-known women writers alongside those more widely disseminated and discussed, this study aims ...

The essays in this book examine the ideology of motherhood in British and American literature from the 16th to the 21st centuries. This book looks at the institution of motherhood, that is, at various cultural interpretations and manipulations of maternity. Presenting mothers whose roles are often empowering yet confining, these essays scrutinize three distinct aspects of motherhood: its social and cultural construction; the significance of maternal absence; and, finally, its representation as an agent of social change. Literary works examined include William Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis; Daniel Defoe's Roxana; John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath; Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury; Charles Dickens' Dombey and Son; Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl; Dorothy Leigh's The Mother's Blessing; and W.S. Penn's Killing Time with Strangers, among others.

Margaret Oliphant’s Curative Gothic Literature

Prolific Scottish novelist Margaret Oliphant (1828–1897), remembered chiefly for her realist fiction and biting literary criticism of contemporary authors, also wrote nineteen supernatural tales. This monograph offers a comprehensive exploration of Oliphant’s Gothic literature, in the light of her religious beliefs, cultural context and experiences of death and mourning, as she survived her husband and all six of her children. Oliphant’s stories set in the afterlife depict the dead as inhabiting a new existence characterised by spiritual growth, while her tales set on earth attempt contact between the mortal and immortal planes. García-Walsh illustrates Oliphant’s unique theological...

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Fyodor Dostoevsky

This volume offers a philosophical and literary exploration of Dostoevsky’s humanism, with a particular focus on his ethical and aesthetic reflections on human nature. Rather than approaching Dostoevsky through the lens of national character or the so-called Russian spirit, this book engages in a sustained dialogue with his work to illuminate the moral and psychological complexities of the human soul. Emphasizing the intimate and often unsettling terrain of interior life, the author contends that Dostoevsky’s literature invites readers to confront their own beliefs, values, and existential commitments. Structured as a series of interlinked essays, the book reads selected Dostoevskian texts through a comparative framework, acknowledging both the richness of his literary output and the vast body of critical commentary surrounding it. The approach is intentionally conversational rather than conclusive, welcoming ambiguity, contradiction, and unresolved tensions. In this spirit, the volume traces Dostoevsky’s pursuit of the sublime—where darkness and beauty coexist in the restless drama of human consciousness.
