Perspectives on Narrativity and Narrative Perspectivization

The book offers a novel approach to the question of how to model narrativity against the background of perspectivization. By bringing together contributions from neuro- and cognitive linguistics, literary studies, and picture theory, the volume uncovers basic mechanisms of perspectivization that are common to the different levels of linguistic structure, literary novels, and narrative pictures. As such, it is also a book on narrative perspectivization since its contributions examine in detail the perspectival principles in medieval, romantic and postmodern literature, in the micro-linguistic structure of language, narrative pictures, literary novels, dramatic texts, and everyday stories. In doing so, it contributes both to the theoretical debate on the core definition of narrativity and offers new empirical investigations on perspectival principles in specific historical, medial, and genre constellations. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students of cognitive linguistics, narrative research and (transmedial) narratology, cognitive poetics, and stylistics.

Violence and the escalation of violence are often linked with emotion and passion. Emotions function to prepare, stir and perform violence, which again stimulates emotions and might lead to a loss of control and (in the case of collective violence) to an intensified coherence of the violent community. Literary or historiographic texts that depic collective violence, functionalise the factor "emotions" in different ways, depending on the respective context: They might serve at justifying violence, or making it plausible, at condemning it, or making it more comprehensible or even enjoyable. This is true both for modern and older accounts. The essays that are collected in the present volume are presented by members of the Giessen research group Communities of Violence and their guests. They ask whether there are perspectives of the emotional side of violence which are specific for certain epoques, and anyalyse medieval and early modern depictions of emotional acts of violance, with a special focus on their contexts, their messages and their aesthetic of reception.

Gender Bonds, Gender Binds

While Gender Studies has made its mark on literary studies, much scholarship on the German Middle Ages is largely inaccessible to the Anglo-American audience. With gender at its core as a category of analysis, "Gender Bonds, Gender Binds"uniquely opens up medieval German material to English speakers. Recognizing the impact of Ann Marie Rasmussen’s Mothers and Daughters in Medieval German Literature, this transatlantic volume expands on questions introduced in her 1997 book and subsequent work. More than a mere tribute, the collection moves the debates forward in new directions: it examines how gender bonds together people, practices, texts, and interpretive traditions, while constraining a...

The volume explores the theme of ambiguity in medieval and early modern literature in essays honoring the life and work of Arthur Groos, Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University, USA, emeritus. The famous expression diz vliegende bîspel from Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is its watchword. In the poem the black and white plumage of the magpie represents the characteristic complexity, ambiguity, and ambivalence of the romance. Removed from its historical context the expression is also a figure of Arthur Groos's wide-ranging intellectual flight. In addition to his work on medieval German verse narrative, he has made important contributions to courtly love poetry, medieval and early modern scientific literature, early modern German literature in general, and especially to opera.

Strategic Imaginations

Imaginations of female rule and the imaginative strategies of women rulers What is the gender of political power ? What happens to the history of sovereignty when we reconsider it from a gender perspective ? Political sovereignty has been a major theme in European thought from the very beginning of intellectual reflection on community. Philosophy and political theory, historiography, theology, and literature and the arts have, often in dialogue with one another, sought to represent or recalibrate notions of rule. Yet whatever covenant was imagined, sovereign rule has consistently been figured as a male prerogative While in-depth studies of historical women rulers have proliferated in the pas...

Exodus

The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Th...
