Measuring Rheological Properties of Cement-based Materials

This book presents the work of the RILEM TC 266-MRP, whose purpose was to enhance the reliability of rheological measurements performed on cement-based materials. It makes users more aware of potential sources of errors in the measurements, and provide guidelines on how to observe, counteract or eliminate the errors. Improving the reliability of rheological measurements will further enhance the use of rheology to investigate different aspects of the fresh properties of cement-based materials. After an introduction into mix design and applications, the book delivers a comprehensive overview of rheology definitions, behavior, and parameters; rheometers; measuring and analysis procedures; difficulties and challenges during measurements; relationships with specific empirical tests; and the behavior of concrete near a surface. This report on the measurement of rheological properties of complex materials such as concrete enables readers to understand the applicable concepts of rheology, and address the challenges on the measuring procedures, the rheological models and some errors and limitations of rheometers used.

Bio-aggregate-based Building Materials

Using plant material as raw materials for construction is a relatively recent and original topic of research. This book presents an overview of the current knowledge on the material properties and environmental impact of construction materials made from plant particles, which are renewable, recyclable and easily available. It focuses on particles and as well on fibers issued from hemp plant, as well as discussing hemp concretes. The book begins by setting the environmental, economic and social context of agro-concretes, before discussing the nature of plant-based aggregates and binders. The formulation, implementation and mechanical behavior of such building materials are the subject of the following chapters. The focus is then put upon the hygrothermal behavior and acoustical properties of hempcrete, followed by the use of plant-based concretes in structures. The book concludes with the study of life-cycle analysis (LCA) of the environmental characteristics of a banked hempcrete wall on a wooden skeleton.

3D Printing of Concrete

The introduction of digital manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing applied to concrete material, opens up new perspectives on the way in which buildings are designed. Research on this theme is thriving and there is a high rate of innovation related to concrete. At the same time, the first life-size constructions made from printed concrete are emerging from the ground. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on the different printing processes as well as on the concrete material that must adapt to these new manufacturing techniques, such as new hardware and new printers for concrete. The possibilities in terms of architectural design are discussed as well as the pathways that remain to be uncovered. The book also explores the challenges that researchers and companies expect to overcome as they get closer to democratizing this potential revolution that is the digital manufacturing of concrete.
