Drawing from Life

  • Categories: Art

Drawing from Life explores revolutionary drawing and sketching in the early People’s Republic of China (1949–1965) in order to discover how artists created a national form of socialist realism. Tracing the development of seminal works by the major painters Xu Beihong, Wang Shikuo, Li Keran, Li Xiongcai, Dong Xiwen, and Fu Baoshi, author Christine I. Ho reconstructs how artists grappled with the representational politics of a nascent socialist art. The divergent approaches, styles, and genres presented in this study reveal an art world that is both heterogeneous and cosmopolitan. Through a history of artistic practices in pursuit of Maoist cultural ambitions—to forge new registers of experience, new structures of feeling, and new aesthetic communities—this original book argues that socialist Chinese art presents a critical, alternative vision for global modernism.

Progress and Challenge of Porous Media: Proceedings of the 16th Annual Meeting Conference on Porous Media

This book is a compilation of selected papers from the 16th Annual Meeting Conference on Porous Media (InterPore 2024). The work focuses on novel techniques for porous media materials, transport mechanisms in porous media, multiscale multiphysics, pore-scale modeling, and porous media mechanics. The contents make valuable contributions to academic researchers, engineers in the industry, and regulators of aviation authorities. As well, readers will encounter new ideas for problems in porous media science and engineering.

A History of Chinese Art in the 20th and 21st Century

  • Categories: Art

This book situates the development of 20th and 21st century Chinese art in such fundamental contexts as Chinese politics and social change and is ideally suited for readers to understand the particularities of Chinese art that are distinct from Western art history. Such an approach is appropriate to the understanding of the development of modern Chinese art, which differs from both the Western approach to art history and the approach to traditional Chinese art, which is limited to the combing of ink and brush heritage and ideological traditions. Based on the scale and influence of historical works, considering the specificity of the term involving 'fine art' in China, and the scope of influe...

From A to Z, Abandon Superstitions (1958; Po Chu Mi Xing in Chinese) to Zuo Wenjun and Sima Xiangru (1984; Zuo Wen Jun Ahe Si Ma Xiang Ru), this comprehensive reference work provides filmographic data on 2,444 Chinese features released since the formation of the People's Republic of China. The films reflect the shifting dynamics of the Chinese film industry, from sweeping epics to unabashedly political docudramas, although straight documentaries are excluded from the current work. The entries include the title in English, the Chinese title (in Pinyin romanization with each syllable noted separately for clarity), year of release, studio, technical information (e.g., black and white or color, letterboxed or widescreen), length, technical credits, literary source (when applicable), cast, plot summary, and awards won.

Due to the influence of pore-throat size distribution, pore connectivity, and microscale fractures, the transport, distribution, and residual saturation of fluids in porous media are difficult to characterize. Petrophysical methods in natural porous media have attracted great attention in a variety of fields, especially in the oil and gas industry. A wide range of research studies have been conducted on the characterization of porous media covers and multiphase flow therein. Reliable approaches for characterizing microstructure and multiphase flow in porous media are crucial in many fields, including the characterization of residual water or oil in hydrocarbon reservoirs and the long-term st...

Proceedings of the International Field Exploration and Development Conference 2023

This book focuses on reservoir surveillance and management, reservoir evaluation and dynamic description, reservoir production stimulation and EOR, ultra-tight reservoir, unconventional oil and gas resources technology, oil and gas well production testing, and geomechanics. This book is a compilation of selected papers from the 13th International Field Exploration and Development Conference (IFEDC 2023). The conference not only provides a platform to exchanges experience, but also promotes the development of scientific research in oil and gas exploration and production. The main audience for the work includes reservoir engineer, geological engineer, enterprise managers, senior engineers as well as students.
