American writer Steve Katz published his first book, The Lestriad, in 1962. Subsequent novels and collections have continue to appear from such imprints as Holt, Rinehart and Winston; Random House; Alfred A. Knopf; Ithaca House; and Sun & Moon. According to critic Jerome Klinkowitz, Katz has "pushed innovation farther than any of his contemporaries." W. C. Bamberger regards him as "the most important living American novelist." This first extended guide to the author's fiction includes a bibliography, detailed index, notes, and 200 pages of illuminating commentary. W. C. Bamberger is the author of ten books and dozens of published critical essays on the major writers of our time, including the volumes, William Eastlake: High Desert Interlocutor and The Work of William Eastlake: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide (both available from Borgo Press). He lives and works in Michigan.

The Innate Capacity

This book is the sequel to Robert Forman's well-received collection, The Problem of Pure Consciousness (Oxford, 1990). The essays in the earlier volume argued that some mystical experiences do not seem to be formed or shaped by the language system--a thesis that stands in sharp contradistinction to deconstruction in general and to the "constructivist" school of mysticism in particular, which holds that all mysticism is the product of a cultural and linguistic process. In The Innate Capacity, Forman and his colleagues put forward a hypothesis about the formative causes of these "pure consciousness" experiences. All of the contributors agree that mysticism is the result of an innate human capa...

Faith, Reason, and Culture

In this book, George Karuvelil seeks to establish the rationality of religion and theology in the contemporary world. Theology has always required some philosophical basis. Moreover, Christian theology has had a dynamic character that enabled it to adapt to more than one philosophy depending on the need of the time. For instance, it shifted in accordance with the change from Neo-Platonism to Aristotelianism in the thirteen century. However, this dynamism has been absent since the dawn of modernity, when reason became identified with modern science to disastrous results. While the advent of postmodernism has brought the limits of modernism to light, it has done nothing to establish the rationality of religion, other than to treat religion as a cultural phenomenon along with science. This book conceives fundamental theology as a discipline that seeks religious truth in the midst of diverse perspectives, ranging from militant atheism to violent religious fanaticism.
