सुब्रह्मण्यम भारती भारती राष्ट्रीय चेतना के अमर गायक थे। उन्होंने एक ऐसे स्वतंत्र भारत की कल्पना की थी, जिसमें धार्मिक, आध्यात्मिक, सामाजिक और राजनीतिक स्वतंत्रता हो। वह देश में सद्भाव और मैत्रीपूर्ण वातावरण देखना चाहते थे। जुलाई-अगस्त 1921 में भारतीजी पेचिश से पीडि़त हुए। शरीर पहले से ही दुर्बल था। काफी इलाज के बाद भी पेचिश ठीक नहीं हो सकी। अंतत: 11 सितंबर की रात में लगभग डेढ़ बजे उनका देहांत हो गया। उनका अंतिम संस्कार बड़ी सादगी से संपन्न हुआ।
