When the U.S.-Korea military alliance began to deteriorate in the 2000s, many commentators blamed "anti-Americanism" and nationalism, especially among younger South Koreans. Challenging these assumptions, this book argues that Korean activism around U.S. relations owes more to transformations in domestic politics, including the decentralization of government, the diversification and politics of civil society organizations, and the transnationalization of social movements.
The Southern Ocean plays a key role in atmospheric CO2 sequestration, accounting for ~40-50% of the anthropogenic CO2 absorbed by the modern ocean. The size of this sink is attributed to strong watermass sinking (i.e., mode/intermediate water and bottom water formation), which transports carbon to the mid- and deep-ocean thus isolating it from the atmosphere for centuries. The Southern Ocean also played a critical role in atmospheric pCO2 variations in the geologic past on both orbital and millennial timescales. Moreover, the Southern Ocean modulates atmospheric and oceanic circulation in the tropics remotely, influencing low-latitude atmospheric CO2 exchange. Thus, the Southern Ocean is a key component of the global climate system, whose operation must be better understood at a range of timescales in order to accurately assess its effects on atmospheric pCO2 in the future. This Research Topic will consist of a set of cutting-edge investigations of the processes and mechanisms of Southern Ocean influence on atmospheric pCO2 and global climate change.
This book presents the combined proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Computer Science and its Applications (CSA-15) and the International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Technologies and Applications (CUTE 2015), both held in Cebu, Philippines, December 15 - 17, 2015. The aim of these two meetings was to promote discussion and interaction among academics, researchers and professionals in the field of computer science covering topics including mobile computing, security and trust management, multimedia systems and devices, networks and communications, databases and data mining, and ubiquitous computing technologies such as ubiquitous communication and networking, ubiquitous software technology, ubiquitous systems and applications, security and privacy. These proceedings reflect the state-of-the-art in the development of computational methods, numerical simulations, error and uncertainty analysis and novel applications of new processing techniques in engineering, science, and other disciplines related to computer science.
The introduction and application of advanced geological and geophysical methods can solve many problems related to geoscience. This Research Topic gives a thorough treatment of the interpretation of geological and geophysical data through advanced techniques and integrated approaches. It aims to create a more reliable integration of various geological and geophysical data in an exploration and new findings context weighing the strengths and limitations of the various methods in order to develop geophysical and geological models. It will also focus on the interpretation techniques for evaluating structural and sedimentological (stratigraphical) processes with applications within resource exploration, geohazards, seismology, seabed ecology and global climate.
The Tai Soo Kim Partners' monograph covers the work of a firm established in 1970. A wide portfolio of projects are featured, including the corporate, cultural, educational and commercial. With offices in both the U.S. and Korea, Tai Soo Kim's work is widely recognized for its unique simplicity, elegance and suitability to the natural and cultural conditions of a place.
Against the backdrop of China’s mounting influence and North Korea’s growing nuclear capability and expanding missile arsenal, South Korea faces a set of strategic choices that will shape its economic prospects and national security. In South Korea at the Crossroads, Scott A. Snyder examines the trajectory of fifty years of South Korean foreign policy and offers predictions—and a prescription—for the future. Pairing a historical perspective with a shrewd understanding of today’s political landscape, Snyder contends that South Korea’s best strategy remains investing in a robust alliance with the United States. Snyder begins with South Korea’s effort in the 1960s to offset the ri...
