Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents

Growing numbers of young people—some 10% to 20% of school-age populations—have mental health problems requiring intervention, and current policy initiatives identify evidence-based therapies as the most effective and relevant forms of treatment. By reviewing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) across a wide spectrum of conditions, the Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents: Bridging Science and Practice closes the gaps between children’s needs and services as well as those between research, training, and practice, Several EBT options, both proved and promising, are offered for each covered disorder and are bolstered by case examples, tables, and reference lists....

Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents

Now in a fully revised and updated second edition, this landmark work brings together leading experts to comprehensively examine all aspects of childhood-onset anxiety disorders. The volume presents the major theoretical perspectives currently informing research and clinical practice, reviews key issues in assessment and diagnosis, and marshals the latest findings on each disorder and its treatment. All chapters in the second edition have been extensively rewritten to reflect significant advances in theory and research, including the results of controlled treatment studies. Important new chapters have been added on behavioral genetics, combined cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy, and prevention. Additionally, separate chapters now cover several disorders that were previously addressed in less depth: generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, separation anxiety, and panic.

Phobias

Combining popular appeal with accessibly written entries suitable for research projects, this fascinating encyclopedia provides a thorough introduction to the psychological and scientific aspects of phobias. Many people have irrational fears. Phobias affect about 19 million Americans each year. So is fear "normal"? At what point do fears become clinical phobias? Phobias: The Psychology of Irrational Fear is the definitive volume on a broad range of topics related to fears and phobias. After an introduction to the subject of fear and phobias, the encyclopedia presents approximately 200 A–Z, cross-referenced entries that address phobias from a variety of angles-types of fears, root causes, p...

Handbook of Clinical Behavioral Pediatrics

Since 1978, the editors have collaborated on several research projects and spent many hours at conventions discussing research, graduate education, and patient care. The idea for this volume arose when we both concluded that the area of behavioral pediatrics needed a "how to" book. Several important scholarly re views had recently appeared. They presented excellent summary information concerning the general assumptions and theories underlying the area of behav ioral medicine with children. But these volumes devote very little attention to the application of clinical methods. What was needed, we thought, was a book that would allow graduate students and practicing clinicians the opportunity to peer into the minds of eminent practitioners and understand their thinking. Thus the book was conceived. Editing books represents a special kind of challenge. One has to "sell" an idea to a group of distinguished colleagues. They have to believe enough in that idea to devote the considerable time and effort necessary to bring thought into reality. In this case, there were two ideas we tried to sell to our colleagues.

Handbook of Developmental Psychopathology

Developmental psychopathology involves the study and prediction of maladaptive behaviors and processes across time. This new edition of the Handbook furthers the goal of integrating developmental processes into the search for adequate categorical systems for understanding child mental health problems and the trajectories that lead to adult psychopathology. The editors respond to contemporary challenges to place individual behavior in a biological and social context. By including a range of approaches, this volume encompasses the complexity of the growing developmental literature. At the same time, it includes the most recent efforts to produce concise child diagnostic categories. In a thorou...
