This is the first translation in English of the anonymously authored 1752 manuscript Tam Giáo Chu Vong (The Errors of the Three Religions). Structured as a dialogue between a Christian priest and a Confucian, this work paints a rich picture of the three traditional Vietnamese religions: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism.

Near Light We Shine

"Volunteers often became involved with Buddhist charities after facing their own experiences of urban alienation in Ho Chi Minh City. Many described the city as a place fraught with moral uncertainty. They formed grassroots charities in response to the perceived moral and material needs of other urban residents. The Sunshine Volunteer Corps was one group that teamed up to provide free, homecooked meals for cancer patients at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. Volunteers also worked with other charity groups to visit orphanages, feed strangers, and donate goods to people in need. This chapter traces how perceptions of a moral downturn in Ho Chi Minh City motivated volunteers to adapt Buddhist teachings and practices toward caring for others through giving"-- Provided by publisher.

Gods, Heroes, and Ancestors

Though a minority religion in Vietnam, Christianity has been a significant presence in the country since its arrival in the sixteenth-century. Anh Q. Tran offers the first English translation of the recently discovered 1752 manuscript Tam Giáo Chu Vong (The Errors of the Three Religions). Structured as a dialogue between a Christian priest and a Confucian scholar, this anonymously authored manuscript paints a rich picture of the three traditional Vietnamese religions: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. The work explains and evaluates several religious beliefs, customs, and rituals of eighteenth-century Vietnam, many of which are still in practice today. In addition, it contains a trove of information on the challenges and struggles that Vietnamese Christian converts had to face in following the new faith. Besides its great historical value for studies in Vietnamese religion, language, and culture, Gods, Heroes, and Ancestors raises complex issues concerning the encounter between Christianity and other religions: Christian missions, religious pluralism, and interreligious dialogue.

New Confucian Horizons

New Confucian Horizons: Essays in Honor of Tu Weiming represents both a sustained reflection on Tu Weiming’s legacy from those who have worked with him and an original contribution to the field of intercultural dialogue that Tu himself spent a lifetime cultivating. The importance of Sino-American intellectual relations in an era of mounting geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China scarcely requires explanation. Tu Weiming’s work has significantly deepened Sino-American cultural relations and continues to provide a vital antidote to those who would sow division between the two worlds. This book deals with Confucianism and New Confucianism and Tu Weiming’s contribution to...

A Vietnamese Moses is the story of Philiphê Binh, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who in 1796 traveled from Tonkin to the Portuguese court in Lisbon to persuade its ruler to appoint a bishop for his community of ex-Jesuits. Based on Binh’s surviving writings from his thirty-seven-year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh’s mission to Portugal and his intens...

Republican Vietnam, 1963–1975

English-language scholarship all too often dismisses South Vietnam as an American creation, a product of US imperialism. Republican Vietnam, 1963–1975 boldly upends this depiction, exposing a diverse and dynamic portrait of the Second Republic. In twelve essays, each based on original archival research, the volume brings to life the Second Republic in all its complexities, displaying how politicians, students, educators, publishers, journalists, musicians, religious leaders, businessmen, and ordinary citizens built a highly intricate society—with dazzling entrepreneurial zeal, an outspoken press, globally engaged religions, a vibrant intellectual and associational culture, and a level of...
