Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Münster (Englisches Seminar), course: Samuel Richardson, language: English, abstract: By its publication, the novel "Pamela" became one of the most popular contemporary books of that time. One of the reasons for the enormous success of "Pamela" might have been that more and more women got interested in literature, especially in romantic novels or religious works. All in all, the era was dominated by a commercialization of literature, the rise of the realism and of the moralistic-didactic intentions, which implicated a change of the recipients of literature. With the dominance of psychotherapeutic theories and methods in the field of pastoral theology, the typical pastoral encounter has been understood to be a private conference in which a pastor addresses a sufferer’s thoughts and emotions. What results is a kind of dualism that is contrary to a historically Christian affirmation of—and concern for—the body. The phenomenon of moral injury further problematizes this model of pastoral care in part due to a greater awareness that trauma is imprinted as much in the body as in the mind. Re-embodying Pastoral Theology uses the problem of moral injury in veterans to propose a pastoral theology that recognizes ritual as the means by which the Christian community addresses the body in pastoral care. In advancing this new approach to “ritual care,” the author draws from the fields of psychology, ritual studies, liturgical studies, and historical theology, as well as the experiences of veterans throughout history. This book endeavors to re-think the Christian approach to moral injury and re-embody the field of pastoral theology.

This volume deals with contemporary issues in the field of English studies in order to exchange ideas and experiences across the fields of English language and literary studies, with particular emphasis on cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary issues raised in the fields of culture, linguistics, translation studies and applied linguistics. By juxtaposing traditionalism and contemporaneity as starting points for presentation of research results, the collection critically evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of both and proposes new theoretical and critical paradigms. The specificity of the book lies in its focusing on the practical criticism and the study of particular linguistic, literary, and cultural phenomena. Insightful, thought-provoking and original chapters raise awareness of the existence of a variety of fresh scholarly research practices in the field of the English language and in literary studies on the whole.
