Internal Security in India

In Internal Security in India, Amit Ahuja, Devesh Kapur, and a cast of leading scholars on the subject focus on India's security and the threats it faces, including insurgencies, terrorist attacks, caste and communal violence, riots, and electoral violence. As the contributors in this volume analyze how the Indian State has managed the core concern of internal security over time, they address these questions: How well has India controlled violence and preserved order? How have the approaches and capacity of the State evolved to attain these twin objectives? And what implications do the State's approach towards internal security have for civil liberties and the quality of democracy?

Design of Energy-Efficient Application-Specific Instruction Set Processors

After a brief introduction to low-power VLSI design, the design space of ASIP instruction set architectures (ISAs) is introduced with a special focus on important features for digital signal processing. Based on the degrees of freedom offered by this design space, a consistent ASIP design flow is proposed: this design flow starts with a given application and uses incremental optimization of the ASIP hardware, of ASIP coprocessors and of the ASIP software by using a top-down approach and by applying application-specific modifications on all levels of design hierarchy. A broad range of real-world signal processing applications serves as vehicle to illustrate each design decision and provides a hands-on approach to ASIP design. Finally, two complete case studies demonstrate the feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed methodology and quantitatively evaluate the benefits of ASIPs in an industrial context.

Fast, Efficient and Predictable Memory Accesses

Speed improvements in memory systems have not kept pace with the speed improvements of processors, leading to embedded systems whose performance is limited by the memory. This book presents design techniques for fast, energy-efficient and timing-predictable memory systems that achieve high performance and low energy consumption. In addition, the use of scratchpad memories significantly improves the timing predictability of the entire system, leading to tighter worst case execution time bounds.

Integrated Circuit Design. Power and Timing Modeling, Optimization and Simulation

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Workshop on Power and Timing Modeling, Optimization and Simulation, PATMOS 2002, held in Seville, Spain in September 2002. The 37 revised full papers and 12 poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on arithmetics, low-level modeling and characterization, asynchronous and adiabatic techniques, CAD tools and algorithms, timing, gate-level modeling and design, and communications modeling and activity reduction.

There is arguably no field in greater need of a comprehensive handbook than computer engineering. The unparalleled rate of technological advancement, the explosion of computer applications, and the now-in-progress migration to a wireless world have made it difficult for engineers to keep up with all the developments in specialties outside their own. References published only a few years ago are now sorely out of date. The Computer Engineering Handbook changes all of that. Under the leadership of Vojin Oklobdzija and a stellar editorial board, some of the industry's foremost experts have joined forces to create what promises to be the definitive resource for computer design and engineering. Instead of focusing on basic, introductory material, it forms a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the field's most recent achievements, outstanding issues, and future directions. The world of computer engineering is vast and evolving so rapidly that what is cutting-edge today may be obsolete in a few months. While exploring the new developments, trends, and future directions of the field, The Computer Engineering Handbook captures what is fundamental and of lasting value.
