Lectures Of Sidney Coleman On Quantum Field Theory: Foreword By David Kaiser

'Sidney Coleman was the master teacher of quantum field theory. All of us who knew him became his students and disciples. Sidney’s legendary course remains fresh and bracing, because he chose his topics with a sure feel for the essential, and treated them with elegant economy.'Frank WilczekNobel Laureate in Physics 2004Sidney Coleman was a physicist's physicist. He is largely unknown outside of the theoretical physics community, and known only by reputation to the younger generation. He was an unusually effective teacher, famed for his wit, his insight and his encyclopedic knowledge of the field to which he made many important contributions. There are many first-rate quantum field theory books (the venerable Bjorken and Drell, the more modern Itzykson and Zuber, the now-standard Peskin and Schroeder, and the recent Zee), but the immediacy of Prof. Coleman's approach and his ability to present an argument simply without sacrificing rigor makes his book easy to read and ideal for the student. Part of the motivation in producing this book is to pass on the work of this outstanding physicist to later generations, a record of his teaching that he was too busy to leave himself.

Discoveries at the Frontiers of Science

With contributions by leading theoreticians, this book presents the discoveries of hitherto hidden connections between seemingly unrelated fields of fundamental physics. The topics range from cosmology and astrophysics to nuclear-, particle- and heavy-ion science. A current example concerns the sensitivity of gravitational wave spectra to the phase structure of dense nuclear and quark matter in binary neutron star collisions. The contributions by Hanauske and Stoecker as well as Banik and Bandyopadhyay relate the consequent insights to hot dense nuclear matter created in supernova explosions and in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Studies of the equation of state for neutron stars are also presented, as are those for nuclear matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Other reviews focus on QCD-thermodynamics, charmed mesons in the quark-gluon plasma, nuclear theory, extensions to the standard general theory of relativity, new experimental developments in heavy ion collisions and renewable energy networks. The book will appeal to advanced students and researchers seeking a broad view of current challenges in theoretical physics and their interconnections.

The ?eld of nuclear physics is entering the 21st century in an interesting and exciting way. On the one hand, it is changing qualitatively since new experim- tal developments allow us to direct radioactive and other exotic probes to target nuclei as well as to sparko? extremely energetic nuclear collisions. In parallel, detector systems are of an impressive sophistication. It is di?cult to envisage all the discoveries that will be made in the near future. On the other hand, the app- cations of nuclear science and technology are broadening the limits in medicine, industry, art, archaeology, and the environmental sciences, etc. This implies that the public perception of our ?eld is changing, s...

International Workshop on Fusion Dynamics at the Extremes

This book deals with the properties and fusion dynamics of very heavy nuclei. It contains the latest experimental results on the formation and fission of superheavy nuclei and on the near-barrier fusion of light exotic nuclei, along with the different theoretical approaches to the description of fusion dynamics and microscopic properties of superheavy nuclei. The book also discusses nuclear collective dynamics and expectations from the use of accelerated beams of radioactive nuclei in fusion reactions. Contents: Aspects of Fusion, Fission and Cluster Radioactivity (W Greiner); Superheavy Nuclei in Deformed Mean-Field Calculations (T Brvenich et al.); The Synthesis of Superheavy Nuclei in the...

Exotic Nuclei: Exon2004 - Proceedings Of The International Symposium

This volume comprises an important collection of papers dedicated to the problems of producing and investigating nuclei far from the line of stability. Together, they discuss the latest results on the production and study of the properties of the lightest to the heaviest nuclei as well as the current plans for future joint investigations in the field of exotic nuclei. The contributions from well-known experts in the field were presented at the International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei, jointly organized by four scientific centers where this field is actively pursued: Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR (Dubna), RIKEN (Japan), GANIL (France), and GSI (Germany).Unique techniques for the synthesis and investigation of the properties of exotic nuclei are being developed together with the realization of large accelerator projects. The creation of these new radioactive ion beam factories requires substantial investment, and they can only be built with the support of international collaborations.

Quantum Mechanics

The text Quantum Mechanics - An Introduction has found many friends among physics students and researchers so that the need for a third edition has arisen. There was no need for a major revision of the text but I have taken the opportunity to make several amendments and improvements. A number of misprints and minor errors have been corrected and a few clarifying remarks have been added at various places. A few figures have been added or revised, in particular the three-dimensional density plots in Chap. 9. I am grateful to several colleagues for helpful comments, in particular to Prof. R.A. King (Calgary) who supplied a comprehensive list of corrections. I also thank Dr. A. Scherdin for help with the figures and Dr. R. Mattiello who has supervised the preparation of the third edition of the book. Furthermore I acknowledge the agreeable collaboration with Dr. H. 1. Kolsch and his team at Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg.

Quantum Mechanics

"Quantum Dynamics" is a major survey of quantum theory based on Walter Greiner's long-running and highly successful courses at the University of Frankfurt. The key to understanding in quantum theory is to reinforce lecture attendance and textual study by working through plenty of representative and detailed examples. Firm belief in this principle led Greiner to develop his unique course and to transform it into a remarkable and comprehensive text. The text features a large number of examples and exercises involving many of the most advanced topics in quantum theory. These examples give practical and precise demonstrations of how to use the often subtle mathematics behind quantum theory. The ...

Proceedings of the International Workshop Fission Dynamics of Atomic Clusters and Nuclei

In this volume, the main results of the last sixty years of research in nuclear fission are summarized, showing how ideas advanced from the beginning, for nuclei have also found useful applications in the new area of atomic clusters. The present status of the physics of fission is discussed in depth, and perspectives for further research are outlined. Contents: Fission Studies with Large Detector Arrays (J K Hwang et al.); Fission, Decay of Nuclei and the Extension of the Periodic System (W Greiner); Neutron Halo of Fissile Nuclei (V I Serov et al.); Decay Channels of Hot Nuclei and Hot Metalic Clusters (P FrAbrich); Cluster Radioactivity (A A Ogloblin et al.); Static and Dynamical Propertie...
