Modeling and Measurement Methods for Acoustic Waves and for Acoustic Microdevices

Modeling and Measurement Methods for Acoustic Waves and for Acoustic Microdevices

Acoustics is a mature field which enjoys a never ending youth. New developments are induced by either the search for a better understanding, or by technological innovations. Micro-fabrication techniques introduced a whole new class of microdevices, which exploit acoustic waves for various tasks, and in particular for information processing and for sensing purposes. Performance improvements are achievable by better modelling tools, able to deal with more complex configurations, and by more refined techniques of fabrication and of integration in technological systems, like wireless communications. Several chapters of this book deal with modelling and fabrication techniques for microdevices, including unconventional phenomena and configurations. But this is far from exhausting the research lines in acoustics. Theoretical analyses and modelling techniques are presented, for phenomena ranging from the detection of cracks to the acoustics of the oceans. Measurement methods are also discussed, which probe by acoustic waves the properties of widely different systems.

The proceedings of the First International Conference on Equipment Intelligent Operation and Maintenance (ICEIOM 2023) offer invaluable insights into the processes that ensure safe and reliable operation of equipment and guarantee the improvement of product life cycles. The book touches upon a wide array of topics including equipment condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, and remaining useful life prediction. With special emphasis on the integration of big data and machine learning, the papers contained in this publication highlight how these technologies make the equipment operation process highly automated and ingenious. Intelligent operation and maintenance is set to act as the driving force behind a new generation of smart manufacturing and equipment upgradation, and promote demand for intelligent product services and management. This is a highly beneficial guide to students, researchers, working professionals and enthusiasts who wish to stay updated on innovative research contributions and practical applications of state-of-the-art technologies in equipment operation and maintenance.

Mechanics Down Under

The 22nd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was hosted by the Australasian mechanics community in the city of Adelaide during the last week of August 2008. Over 1200 delegates met to discuss the latest development in the fields of theoretical and applied mechanics. This volume records the events of the congress and contains selected papers from the sectional lectures and invited lectures presented at the congresses six mini-symposia.

Towards Improved Flood Defences

Without our dikes and dunes, 60% of the Netherlands would flood on a regular basis. This area is home to 9 million people. The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, February 2022) underlines the importance of reinforcing water safety. Sea levels are rising and extreme weather is becoming increasingly common. The Flood Protection Programme, the largest Dutch water safety operation since the Delta Works, will help us minimise the likelihood of flooding. New knowledge and innovation are urgently needed The Dutch dikes have stood firm for more than 1,000 years. After disasters in 1916 and 1953, storm surge barriers and dams have been added to the network of protective dikes. Following the floods in 1993 and 1995, the Room for the River programme was implemented. New knowledge of flood risks led to the introduction of new, often stricter standards for flood defences in 2017. Funder: NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences P15-21.

The maturity of BEM over the last few decades has resulted in a substantial number of industrial applications of the method; this demonstrates its accuracy, robustness and ease of use. The range of applications still needs to be widened, taking into account the potentialities of the Mesh Reduction techniques in general. Theoretical developments and new formulations have been reported over the last few decades, helping to expand the range of boundary elements and other mesh reduction methods (BEM/MRM) applications as well as the type of modelled materials in response to the requirements of contemporary industrial and professional environments. As design, analysis and manufacture become more i...

Multi-field Modeling of Soft Active Materials

An expert and up-to-date discussion of the properties and design of soft active material modeling In Multi-Field Modeling of Soft Active Materials: Properties and Design, distinguished researcher Rui Xiao delivers an up-to-date exploration of the multi-field modeling of soft active materials, including shape-memory polymers, liquid crystal elastomers, dielectric elastomers, magnetic elastomers, and hydrogels. The book discusses the modeling, simulation, and theoretical progress on each covered soft active material. The author provides guidance on future development of the theoretical approaches for active materials, as well as efficient tools to design functional soft machines composed of ac...

Analysis of Piezoelectric Structures and Devices

This edited work covers piezoelectric materials in the form of beams, plates, shells, and other structural components in modern devices and structures. Applications are frequency control and detection functions in resonators, sensors, actuators, oscillations, and other smart and intelligent structures. The products and technology are with us in our daily life through computers and communication devices. The contributions cover novel methods for the analysis of piezoelectric structures including wave propagation, high frequency vibration, material characterization, and optimization of structures. Understanding of these methods is increasingly important in the design and modelling of next generation devices and micro-structures with piezoelectric elements and effects.
