Researching the English Reformation
Researching the English Reformation studies the history and historiography of early Anglicanism in order to pay tribute to the scholarship of W. Brown Patterson. Three of the volume’s sections are inspired by Patterson’s research monographs. The first taking its cue from Patterson’s study of Thomas Fuller, analyses the intersection of mythology and historiography surrounding the English Reformation. The second, following Patterson’s study of William Perkins, turns to the general theological and political contours of early modern England. The third pans out in both geography and chronology, thus emulating Patterson’s award-winning study of King James VI and I. The fourth and final section analyses how, in the nineteenth century, the early modern period was reinvented by the Parker Society and the Oxford Movement. Contributors are: Benjamin M. The protestant reformation was critical to the efflorescence of printing in England between 1547 and 1553. Celyn David Richards explores English print culture during this turbulent period, in which an official programme of reform, new censorship dynamics and increasingly sophisticated commercial relationships contributed to the trade’s rapid expansion. Edward VI’s reign saw unprecedented levels of religious print production, London’s first publishing syndicate, and a climate of protestant ascendancy which helped English print culture to make up ground on its continental counterparts.

Sedgwick shows how Anglican moral theology has a distinctive ethos, drawing on Scripture, Augustine, the medieval theologians (Abelard, Aquinas and Scotus), and the great theologians of the Reformation, such as Luther and Calvin. A series of studies of Tyndale, Perkins, Hooker, Sanderson and Taylor shows the flourishing of this discipline from 1530 to 1670. Anglican moral theology has a coherence which enables it to engage in dialogue with other Christian theological traditions and to present a deeply pastoral but intellectually rigorous theological position.
