Molecular Tools for the Detection and Quantification of Toxigenic Cyanobacteria

A guide to state-of-the-art molecular tools for monitoring and managing the toxigenicity of cyanobacteria Runaway eutrophication and climate change has made the monitoring and management of toxigenic organisms in the world’s bodies of water more urgent than ever. In order to influence public policy regarding the detection and quantification of those organisms, it is incumbent upon scientists to raise the awareness of policy makers concerning the increased occurrence of toxigenic cyanobacteria and the threats they pose. As molecular methods can handle many samples in short time and help identify toxigenic organisms, they are reliable, cost-effective tools available for tracking toxigenic cy...

The Molecular Life of Diatoms

The Molecular Life of Diatoms

Diatoms are the most species rich group of algae, and they contribute about 20% of annual global carbon fixation. They play major roles in ocean food webs and global biogeochemical cycles. They are also a target of the biotechnology industry because of their nano-patterned silica cell wall and high lipid content. Diatoms have received increasing attention as more genomes became available and because of the development of genome editing tools such as the CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which has made diatoms as genetically tractable as well-established biological model species. This book provides an overview on diatom molecular biology. It brings together international leading experts in the field to discuss the latest data and developments from genes to ecosystems. As the understanding of diatoms is currently experiencing a step change, it is critical to allow for synergistic approaches on diverse aspects of diatom biology and evolution. The books offers fundamental insights into the molecular life of diatoms; at the same time new scientific concepts are developed based on the application of the latest molecular tools and genomic information to explore the fascinating lifestyle of diatoms.

Protist Diversity and Geographical Distribution

Conservation and biodiversity of protists The conservation of biodiversity is not just an issue of plants and vertebrates. It is the scarcely visible invertebrates and myriads of other microscopic organisms that are crucial to the maintenance of ecological processes on which all larger organisms and the composition of the atmosphere ultimately depend. Biodiversity and Conservation endeavours to take an holistic view of biodiversity, and when the opportunity arises to issue collections of papers dealing with too-often neglected groups of organisms. The protists, essentially eukaryotes that cannot be classi?ed in the kingdoms of animals, fungi, or plants, include some of the lea- known groups ...

Speciation in Ancient Lakes

The present volume should be regarded as a general introduction to the subject of ancient lakes. The special nature and environments of the ancient lakes and extant biodiversities are briefly outlined. Tempo and mode of intra-lacustrine speciation are discussed and various factors affecting speciation and extinction events are listed.

Diatoms of Meromictic Lakes Adjacent to the Gordon River, and of the Gordon River Estuary in South-west Tasmania

This study is a taxonomic account describing 272 diatom taxa, from 50 genera, found in the meromictic lakes adjacent to the Gordon River and the Gordon River estuary in south-west Tasmania. The flora of the region includes cosmopolitan, tropical, Antarctic, Southern Ocean and uniquely Australian taxa in habitats ranging from fresh water to brackish and marine. Sampling sites were ordinated using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and a direct correlation was found between their species composition and salinity. The taxonomic and iconographic sections include descriptions and illustrations of the taxa encountered as well as information on their autecology. This information has been applied in palaeolimnological investigations of sediment cores from Lake Fidler. These studies have provided a historical perspective on which recommendations for improved management of the Gordon River and its adjacent lakes have been based.
