"The scholars" is a fine novel by Wu Jingzi, which appeared in book form in the beginning period of the 18th century. The book depicts the greed, hypocrisy and ugliness of varoius types of scholars, exposes the decadence and darkness of the feudal society, and criticizes and satirizes the imperial examination system and the feudal ethical code. With succinct language and excellent characterization, it is a masterpiece of classical satirical literature of China. The English translation of the 55 chapter edition is that of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, which may be at present a complete English translation closest to the original work.
This volume explores and compares linguistic practices among young people in linguistically and culturally diverse urban spaces.
