Nordic Experiences in Pan-nationalisms

This book seeks to reassess and shed new light on pan-nationalisms in general and on Scandinavianism/Nordism in particular, by seeing them as possible futures and as interconnected ideas and practices across and beyond Europe. An actor- and practice-oriented approach is applied at the expense of more essentialist categorisations of what pan-nationalism is, or is not, to underline both the synchronic and diachronic diversity of various pan-national movements. A range of expert international scholars discuss encounters, transfers, similarities and differences among pan-movements in Norden and Europe based on a broad empirical material, focusing on Scandinavianism/Nordism, pan-Slavism, pan-Turanism, pan-Germanism and Greater Netherlandism, and the position of Britishness in Great Britain. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of nationalism, European history, European studies and Scandinavian studies, history, social science, political geography, civil society and literary studies.

Ingmar Bergman

The late Jean Renoir once observed that every film auteur tells and retells essentially one story: his own. In this pathbreaking study of all Bergman's films, Hubert I. Cohen vividly demonstrates how the great director is the quintessential auteur, driven from his earliest efforts by an "almost pathological narcissism: toward self-revelation. Drawing on the numerous interviews Bergman has granted as well as other biographical and critical sources, including the director's autobiography The Magic Lantern, Cohen shows us how Bergman's preoccupation with his own life is the wellspring of his art. Progressing chronologically through Bergman's oeuvre, he finds the films both the product of and commentary on their creator's childhood and youth, loves and beliefs.

History Making and Present Day Politics

In this collection, some of South Africa's most distinguished historians and social scientists present their views on the importance of history and heritage for the transformation of the South African society. Although popular use of history helped remove apartheid, the study of history lost status during the transition process. Some of the reasons for this, like the nature of the negotiated revolution, social demobilization, and individualization, are analyzed in this book. The combination of scholarly work with an active role in changing society has been a central concern in South African history writing. This book warns against the danger of history being caught between reconciliation, co...
